Well, I see Ted Heath is in the news.

And much about the Common Market.
Need Cod Wars and Italian kidnapping for the full nostalgia trip.

Meanwhile, have just taken my slipover off.

Surely for a cardigan is the correct attire for the too warm for a jumper, too chilly for just a shirt days

A tank top I always assume to be like a vest or undershirt, anything that goes over a regular shirt is a cardigan or gilet, of which I have a couple, one a reversible hi-viz with a plain fleece on the other side, the other a Fox Racing fleece I bought in Chamonix back in the 90’s, and still wear it a lot, ideal for this time of year. It didn’t have hand warmer pockets, so a friend of mine added two zipped front pockets, which makes it even mor useful now.
Oh, and I have a couple of down ‘vests’, as Americans call them, or gilets, as everyone else does.
Again ideal for this time of year.

I've long been an advocate of the gilet. Its ability to take up the slack between conditions has for me, made it the perfect transitional garment.

Tank tops do similar of course but rarely do they come fitted with a zip which allows further temperature fettling, never mind a nice hood.

Though I must say, this gentleman suits one very well.

anything that goes over a regular shirt is a cardigan or gilet

Except if it's a tank top.

Like that ^^ 🙂

I'm trying to remember which year it was that the hipsters started calling body warmers "gilets", can anyone help?

That's sort of how I imagine CFH to look.

And if so, can the same wise person identify when a "tank top" stopped being a hideous sleeveless jumper that your nan made you, and turned into a vest for girls?

I’m much more wise than any of you.

It happened when you put the hideous sleeveless jumper your nan made in the hot wash and shrunk it.

Before birthdays and christmas my auntie used to send me a selection of knitting patterns for me to select my upcoming present from.

She even knitted my sisters bikinis, that did not end well.

Are they the solution to these jumper on, jumper off days?

They are certainly the solution on mornings when I find I have no ironed shirts in the wardrobe.
