Does anyone here have a whippet?
They seem like a pretty good all round dog but the only thing putting us off is the fact they may need a coat when it rains or in winter.
This seems a bit of a faff, so does anyone have first hand experience of them? Do they really need a coat to stop them getting cold when it rains?
We've also looked at a whippet / bedlington cross by way of something a similar size but more hardy but the beddies have a bit of a bad rap for killing cats, something I'd not be fussed by (semi-joking..) but I suspect the neighbours would.
Is there another similar sized dog with a similar temperament that anyone can recommend as an alternative?
We're looking for a mutt that likes:
- sleeping (but will get three 1/2 to 1 hour walks a day)
- children
- visitors and won't bite them
- silence (i.e. doesn't yap all day for no reason)
- bikes
- camping
- eating toys and not furniture
Any views / guidance would be appreciated.
Patterdales are nice little dogs, they love to run, so it will be happy bounding along those trails.
we have a lurcher who is 3/8 grey, 1/4 whippet, 1/8 border collie, 1/8 bearded collie, 1/8 bedlington(or pure mutt lurcher if you prefer)
She's often referred to as that big ****in hairy whippet. Doesnt chew what she shouldnt, doesnt eat children, hates cats, pretty good with most dogs although prone to being timid with some dogs and over rough with others, pretty trainable but pretty thick, wouldnt be a good trail dog, doesnt need a coat, likes camping, doesnt bark, could sleep for england, copes fine with being left all day in the back yard with her kennel and some chews when needs must. She's about 23inch to shoulder but folds up small.

lurchers are cheap too!
Similar size comes complete with coat.

Mate has 2 italian greyhounds, much smaller thn the regular flavour - lovely dogs
I was going to say Italian greyhounds I've drawn a couple for someone lovely dogs nice temprement and look so sleek. If I was after a dig that size that would be my first choice.
hey i have 2 whippets...infact i had 3 but unfortunately one of them had to be put to sleep last year due to health probs...
whippets are very loyal and loving.... alot of people think they are hard done to cos of the way they look being thinner than ya average dog... but thats the way they are ! running all the time.
i ALWAYS put a coat on them in winter otherwise they start shaking (lol)
yeah altho they have fur its just not thick enough for cold winters.... they are real couch potatoes dogs after they have had a run....they like to be pampered (well mine do anyway...
Do Boarder terriers pay rent ?

The only thing I can't answer is whether whippets like camping as never tried. Our extended family has 5 (Mum plus 4 of her litter of 10) and every single one of them has the most wonderful placid and affectionate nature. They love sleeping LOTS, but also love long walks or very very fast runs for short periods. Ours very seldom bark and none have ever bitten.
Yes, all ours have fleeces for the winter because they don't have thick coats.
Another vote here for Lurchers, we have two. Though one is not strictly a Lucher as his Mum was a Cocker. If you can imagine a smooth coated Lucher with the head of a Cocker which runs as fast as a Lurcher but goes all day with his nose to the ground like a Cocker - that's him.
Both would sleep all day if you let them, they go out for around and hour each day and are no trouble at all. Again they fold up in to nothing unless they're on the sofa, then you might as well have adopted a baby Giraffe.
She's stunning Anagallis
If you get a whippet you will need a flat cap and a pigeon loft as well.
Edric, I've already got a flat cap and a pigeon loft...
Keep the comments / suggestions rolling in folks, and a massive thanks to everyone who has already posted...
We've got a lurcher (greyhound/whippet/collie cross) who is now 18 months old. Very gentle temperament, good with our two children and visitors. No subcutaneous fat at all so looks half starved even though he's well fed. He doesn't have to wear a coat even in the winter.
He was a food thief when younger (really loves 1/2 lb of butter or a couple of avocados) but he's more disciplined in that respect now.
He really enjoys 1-2 hrs running whilst we cycle but is content with 2 lots of an hours walk a day if we're not cycling.
Ours was great camping until it came to getting cold overnight in N. Wales - he then had to share the adults bed.
At home he feels that the sofa was provided for him.
He thrives on human company and is an enthusiastic part of the family.
He'll bark at unfamiliar noises or if he's trying to engage other dogs in chasing games but will be quiet if told to do so.
Definitely not a yappy, noisey dog but not overly brave either (unlike terriers in my experience).
For a so called 'sight hound' he only sees things that are moving - he has been known to walk straight past a pheasant standing still in the grass but he has bat like hearing.
I can really recommend lurchers as good all round family dogs.
heres my whippet/s...

More whippet pictures please 🙂
What everyone said about lurchers. Ours is a great family pet, but not a trail hound built for hours of pounding rocky trails, but will happily head off with me for an hour or so on softer ground.

Have a look on here , I think you need to register to see all the sub forums.
if i was you i would get a whippet they are loyal good with kids don't eat your kitchen and they don't bark all the time lick most small dogs. i have grown up with whippets and i would never be with out one
(bit off topic but elaine anne is your whippet kc reg and has it got all its bits as i have looked every where for a whippet dog and have been unable to find the right one and yours does seem to be the size of a greyhound)
Cracking whippet pics. JD is a whippet/staffie cross rescue dog - bit like a whippet on steroids. Has the staffie shoulders but (reading the above) a lot more of the whippet characteristics - runs like the wind (especially if being chased by other dogs), shivers in the cold (but does have a rather fetching black 'security' t shirt . . . security? . . . yeah right 😆 ), can sleep for England (Wales?) loves beer and eats jumpers 😕 . . . oh and footballs.

Bedlington?
I've got one.
Runs for miles. Loves camping. LOVES biking, she gets so excited when she sees the bike coming out.
Needs a coat for winter (a converted rab neutrino bodywarmer in her case), but its not much fuss.
Very affectionate and loyal. Great dogs.
Ellie:
Whippets are very lovely animals but we plumped for a lurcher / terrier cross (rescue dog). Perfect size of a dog, shouts like hell if anything unusual happens near the house and after a lot of hard work is very well trained.
When he's shaved, he's like a large, well covered whippet. Has many of the sight hound characteristics combined with terrier / collie intelligence and thus far, never had a sick day in his life. Well worth having a look round the local Dogs' Trust rescue centres.
but does have a rather fetching black 'security' t shirt
I want to see pics please.
Trailhounds will fit your bill - I have 2, both from the Dogs Trust. Silent, love to snooze, astonishingly fast when they're running, and hugely family-friendly.
We have a 13 and half year old whippet called Belle. She ticks all of those boxes above. She is amazing with kids (she thinks she is one and follows them around the house playing). Loves a big cuddle. She used to get herslf into bed and the quilt would still be perfect with a little lump in the middle. She is happy to go anywhere where we are so camping is no problem.
Regarding a coat if she is out for under an hour I wouldn't bother. She never needs a wash just a quick towel down when wet and no doggy smells. I love them.
Angallis, that is a beautiful looking dog.
Irish Terrier, great with kids, other dogs, loves his walks but also loves to sleep, guards the house without shouting the neighbourhood down, never chewed anything more valuable than a toilet roll in protest at being left, generally all round top dog. He is also pretty fast but not whippet speed, he had a very good friend who was a whippet and when they played, what he lacked in speed, he made up for in tactics. 😉
The only danger is that you will never get any peace when taking him to a pub as you end up with a queue of people wanting to find out what he is and pet him.
Best dog ever.

So pretty much any dog, as long as you & the puppy/dog are trained correctly.
Hungarian Vizslas are all the rage at the moment, and make a perfect traildog.
Lovely dog! Irish Terriers are top mutts. My dad had one when we were kids. Great until upset by other dogs but fearsome when need be!
We wanted an Irish but decided on a smaller version, see a couple of posts above.
When we were looking, it was a toss up between Irish, Lakeland & Wheaten. All fantastic dogs that ooze character. I have only had to witness my dog being fearsome once and that was plenty.
Please stop with the dogs threads, cause I can't have one right now. In the meantime I may have to start a JD fanclub - MamaD he's gorgeous! 🙂
My dog gets on great with whippets, they totally pwn her for speed so she gets all submissive and lets them bully her. Funny to see as she's so much bigger.
We had a Whippet when I was a kid and she was a great dog but a thief and a bit thick.
Not bothered by cats unless they move!
My Dad said she was from racing stock so was a lot bigger and broader than some you see - Those Italian Greyhouns look a bit fragile to me.
We have a Tibetan Terrier now and she is the best.
Great with the kids, runs well, cat like agility and leaping, very playfull and clever.
A big plus is she does not drop hair - Bedlingtons and Poodles and their crosses are the same.
We have a Whippet and a Lurcher (1/2 Whippet, 1/4 Bedlington, 1/4 Greyhound) both about a year old now. In fact our Whippet looks just like the one in the photo posted my elfin. I think they're amazing dogs. The whippet is gentle but playful. the Lurcher isn't so gentle but i think thats more to do with his size (4 stone, 30mph missile!) Both will sleep all day and are happy with a 20 min burn out in the meadow behind our house. Wouldn't make good trail dogs as they get tired after more than an hour of walking. Haven't tried camping yet and not sure what they're like with kids (our fist is due Feb so we'll wait and see!). I wouldn't hesitate to get Whippets again. They really are easy to look after but so much fun to watch running. The speed they go is amazing!
thedyslexic1 ::::: my whippet is not kc kennel club or anything.... his father is a show dog and his mother came from hunting stock (so i guess hes more lurcher really (but he has more looks of his dad but with the hunting instinct of his mother... his father the show dog variety stands at 22 inches and his mother (god rest her soul was about the same height.... the fotos of the above whippet stands at 21 inches (he,s also shorter in the body than his mum and dad...
his mother gave birth very late in life (we tried to breed them a good few years back but nowt happend , then one day milo my whippet popped out....there were only 3 pups and two were still birth, so we hence we kept this whippet/lurcher cross. hes 4 year old now and his dad is about 15 year old..... sadly his mom was put to sleep last year through health probs.... his mother was quater saluki (she had slight feathery tail ...
JD's blushing now Art 😳 . Must dig out the security t-shirt and do more pics.
I looked after a stray female whippet overnight & she was a lovely dog. She wasn't interested in eating our 2 cats, which was nice & has been trained as it wouldn't get up onto the bed to go to sleep. Was great walking it on a lead too, wanted to keep it infact. 🙁
Just to add to my earlier post - don't forget to insure the dog. Ours just incurred over £800 of surgical bills after he pursued a squirrel through a wire fence that the squirrel could fit through but he couldn't. He's unimpressed that he's now forced to wear the 'cone of shame' to prevent him taking out his own stitches prematurely.
Lovely loyal dog but apparently not the world's brightest!
Dotty is fantastic, shorter haired skinner version of our Kea!
Hi everyone, thanks for all your help and advice.
After much deliberation we've chosen to go with Torminalis' suggestion of an Irish Terrier. Here's a picture of the little chap - name yet to be decided but probably going to be called Wotsit or Monty:
congratulations - Looks like a Monty to me...
this is Our Ted
now 7 months old, top little chap, currently snoozing besides me - his head getting in the way of the laptop...
Think it's time he took me out for a 'hangover clearing' walk..... 😉
