[Closed] Talk to me about tequila (or other gluten free alcohols) and avoiding hangovers

I've more or less topped drinking since going gluten free - and I have the urge to get properly lashed!

I like wine, but can't/don't drink a lot of it. Cider is okay, but typically way way too sweet.

Been recommended to try tequila, pulped limes and soda water - sounds easy enough, but I know nothing of tequila other than shots when I was young and hammered.

What's good? And what's tequila like for hangovers (I could be a world champion at being hungover...)

Get in some strong cider - Henry Weston's or the like. Three bottles of that and you'll be sorted.

Or vodka - a quick look suggests that lowly Smirnoff is gluten free. There's a whole world of vodka-based cocktails / mixers out there.

Bombay Sapphire, Schweppes, ice and lemon sorted.

I haven't drunk tequila for over 20 years. It was a bad night.

Terrible hangover as well.

You need to try a dryer cider; Most of the stuff in mainstream shops is rubbish. Aspall is the most acceptable

Why not try an alternative to a barley beer?

EDIT - Bard's Beer is a malted gluten free beer

Mezcal is more 'interesting' but the hangover is desperate.

Less of a headache from clear spirits.

Alcoholic drinks contain gluten..?

If it's fermented from wheat or barley it will do unless it's been distilled, but that basically just means beer. Nearly all spirits, wines and ciders are gluten free unless they've had something funny added to them.

Can't answer your questions, but the best thing about tequila is it gives you an excuse to sing terrorvision.
Altogether, "tequila, it makes me happy"

stuff that you drink when you're young like Jose Gold is made up of 51% agave sugar (the legal minimum) but anything made from 100% is way different & can actually be very pleasant. Might be able to get something like that from a decent offie or larger supermarket, otherwise the Internet will sort you out! No idea what it's like for a hangover but I'd have thought sticking to the clear stuff (silver/blanco) would be wise.

I don't get hangovers from Tequila but maybe that's because I don't drink the rubbish stuff. Get something nice. Must be my favourite drink 😀

It's not alcohol that gives you a hangover, its all the chemicals, preservatives, flavourings and other crap they put in drinks that give you the hangover. Ever since I stopped drinking mass produced fizzy flavourless lager and started drinking decent properly brewed beer made from real ingredients, I no longer get hangovers, even if i've had a bit of a session. OK the beers I drink are on average weaker than premium crappy lagers, but only just - they are usually in the 4.3 - 4.6-ish %, unless I have a few Belgian beers or something like Jaipur then that would push the average content to greater than premium lagers. Obviously not a great bit of advice if you're after Gluten Free drinks, apart from whatever you drink try to make it as real and authentic as possible and try to avoid the usual mass produced chemical loaded fodder.

Back in my crappy lager drinking days in order to combat hangovers my pre-going to bed routine after a few beers was a cup of tea and some marmite on toast. I swore by that remedy to minimise the effects of a hangover the next morning. Probably a placebo but it seemed to work for me. No need to do it these days now i'm on proper beer, other than the fact I usually have the munchies and its better than a Kebab - well healthier at least.

So the requirement is to be able to consume a lot of alcohol? 😀

I've had plenty of hangovers from quality "properly brewed" beer if I drink enough. Though true about the chemicals in crap stuff. Just a small amount that doesn't really get you pissed and still a headache in the morning.

That said, wheat beer is a killer for me. Done it a couple of times where I've been absolutely flawed the next day being sick. I really need to steer clear of the stuff.

Big problem with decent beer though is while you may have less hangovers, it's a prime beer gut producer.

There are quite a few GF beers available. Estrella for lager, M&S do two nice ones, and Brewdog does one that is unusual but nice. All are more expensive than the usual non GF beer.
All spirits are GF as gluten is a protein and doesn't carry over in the distillation process. Paler spirits have lower levels of higher alcohols that contribute to hangovers, so good quality vodka would be the 'best' for a clean hangover.

Get yourself a nice bottle of Patròn it's not cheap but it's how tequila should be. There's nicer ones but my wallet won't run to them.

Odd - drink wheats beers like they are going out of fashion and whilst I know I've had a lot to drink next day I'm never hungover/sick/banging head etc.

I've had a few sessions in the CafeNo Se in Antigua, Guatemala and for me it was hangover every time. It was good stuff but maybe I just got a bit carried away. Having said that, a few g and t's here in Malaga last night almost wrote off today. Maybe I'm just getting too old and need to stick to shandy.

MrsMC reckons they pour gin here for 6 seconds , that's a f of a lot.

Is there any decent alternative to patrone that doesn't cost £70per litre?

Unfortunately distillation doesn't guarantee gluten free or more specifically the small amino acid chains (gliadins) in gluten that are the culprits.

If this was actually the case then all distilled alcohol would taste exactly the same... And chemically be the same but alcohol and water are azeotropic ... You can google that ... But it means no matter how many times you distill you can Never end up with a pure liquid. In,practice it means that according to funny things like the weather (air pressure) the final product will vary.

Rather sadly the lower quality ones possibly are safer .... Than the artisanal whisk us for example ...it's also a bit unknown how the gliandins will enter your system in the presence of alcohol ... The definition of a proclamine such as gluten is that it is soluble in alcohol.

That's not saying it will constain glaidins but no chemist I know would guarantee it doesn't... Unless you start with a non grain one like tequila or rum ....
That said years of experience tells me gin and vodka are usually ok.... Tequila and mescal you are better sticking to the adult versions anyway as someone else said ..

Don't shoot me it's just chemistry.

Rather more sadly for the OP I found it increasingly difficult to get properly hammered without a hangover as my coeliac has progressed. It's less about a headache than my digestive tract ... And many have nothing to do with the gluten and more to do with having a wrecked digestive tract.

Decent red is usually good, can't stomach champagne or anything Sur lies (like muscadet)

Not a coeliac (although my dad is so parents only have gluten free beer)

Brewdog vagabond is the only one that is palletable imo - it is unusual but its better than the others.

There are some great Tequilas. However, its absolutely terrible for hangovers.

OP I would practice your wine drinking 🙂

Most of my worst hangovers have included tequila, but I think that's effect rather than cause, I don't drink it til I am fairly drunk already.

There's a bunch of decent gluten free beers- they're cropping up in bars too now, mostly due to hipsters but then this is hipsters' one useful function. Quite a few are rubbish but these imo are highlights (my brother's a proper sandal wearing CAMRA fatbeard and he's helped me track down some good ones too). Real beer seems to be harder to do than lager, basically the darker and chewier it is the trickier.

(some standard commercial beers are gluten free or as near as dammit- I can drink Bud, Coors Light, standard Estrella, without any issues. I do have a little tolerance but I've heard from completely zero tolerance folks that Coors Light is a good un.)

Estralla Damm Daura- watery fightin' lager. It gets bad reviews because of what it is, but sometimes, bbq lager is what you want. Saxon GF lager is much the same and has the advantage of coming in a can, for greater wifebeatingness

Hambletons Gluten Free Lager- this varies a little by batch but when you get a good one, it is honestly my favourite lager, not just favourite GF. Lovely. Tesco sometimes sell this as a "craft" line.

Hambeltons Good As Gold- one of the two mainline beers I know of that happens to be gluten free, along with the Brewdog. Ace. (their GFA- Gluten Free Ale- tastes of disappointment, it's like they made a good beer then watered it down)

Brewdog Vagabond- hoppy as ****, but that's because it's Brewdog not because it's GF. Ironically this seems to be vile from the tap but it's decent bottled. It's the other one where the brewer's gone "this is good enough to not just sell in the GF ghetto"

Mikkeler do a couple, I like the Peter Mary and Pale best. Gold I found tasted off.

Greens do loads and tbh so far there's not been any that I don't like. The Dark is maybe the best dark GF beer, lovely and rich. Not something I'm really into but I still love it. They have the biggest GF range out there and they sell their lager and amber ale in Sainsburys.

Scarborough Fair gets great reviews, I didn't especially like it but it's well rated. St Peters is another decent lagery beer but not IMO as nice as the GFL.

Ones that I don't rate- All the Stewarts Brewery ones. They might have fixed this now to be fair but I got some of the first straight from the brewery and they were just awful. Crop Circle gets good reviews for taste but it smells weird. Cerveza tastes of nothing, Against The Grain again gets great reviews but IMO is just watery. Night Mission, yet another reviewer favourite but too weak tasting for me.

There's a bunch more

Tequila has been at the heart of 90% of my 'wow did I really do that' drunken behaviour.....after a particularly heavy night once, my mate didn't go out again for 6 months!....hideous hangovers too, and I can get pretty smashed without getting a hangover!

Yep you're right there. Every time I return from a beer festival I have no trace of a hangover. It was definatley the dodgey bag of peanuts I had and nothing to do with the pure hanger free ale I'd been drinking that made me feel like shit with a mouth like the inside of a cat litter tray.
*two or three pints is not a session. 😛
Another vote for Vagabond. The only gluten free beer that I've tried that actually tastes like beer.
