With my employer relocating at some point this year i have been thinking about options. I have now been told that the vacancies are to be posted in the next couple of weeks with applications and interviews to follow.

I am trying to think about pros and cons about relocating. Currently i am in Cheltenham and work would be relocating to Shotton in Flintshire.

The obvious pro is i would still have a job and a pension, the obvious con in a part of the country i know nothing about. There would also be the issue of the girlfriend and her getting a job. If she quit her job would she be entitled to benefits whilst she looked for work?

What sort of thing would people expect as help relocating? are there any government schemes/benefits to be aware of?

In the worse case of being made redundant a few years down the line, what sort of job market normally exists in the area.

There is obviously the crystal ball issue of when the recession ends and the job market recovers.

My only decision is to apply for a job, and then make a decision about relocating nearer the time when i have to make one.

I'm a bit confused. Is the company making you redundant and then asking you to apply for a new job in a different location?

When I started my current job I moved from Essex to Wiltshire (thank god!) and asked about relocation assistance, expecting to be given a bit of info about letting agents, doctors etc. I did get that, but also got paid to stay in a B&B, all meals paid etc until I'd sorted out a place. Took a few months, because you have to know a bit about somewhere before you know where to rent. I think the limit was £4.5k, which I pretty much used. I believe it to be government backed (reclaimable by the company) but am not certain. If you owned a house the amount of assistance was much greater.

Good luck whatever you decide to do. Your plan of going for the new job and then working out the feasibility later looks to be a good one.

Depends on your employer and their terms

I relocated to a better job (way back in the 90s), and got 6 months rent, removals and storage paid. Yes I moved from where I had lived all my life (Lincolnshire) to somewhere I'd never heard of (Redhill/Crawley) and it took a while to settle down and find my feet, but at least you are moving with the same employer.

Since then we have gone the opposite way after I was made redunddant after a takeover and MrsSwadey had the relocation option. We upped from Crawley up to Derbyshire - knowing nothing (apart from Peak District holidays) and no one - except each other.

8 years on, it was the best thing we could have done - loads of friends, great place to live. And she also got the relocation package. Took me several years to get a decent job, and in the current climate that may be an issue for your GF.

The company currently works from 3 sites, 250ish employees, it will be working from 1 site and there will be 100ish employees. You can apply for a job but no guarantee of getting it, but you will get redundancy if you are either unsuccessful or don't want to go.

Half way through the 90day consulation process and nothing but rumors to go on... I would just like to know!!!!!!!

If you have ever been to Shotton you would probably start to look at redundancy as the most favourable option.

Shotton is in wales, and so cheaper housing and council tax than cheltenham, Llandegla, delamere, and the whole of north wales are just up the road, as is manchester and the peak district, the people are freindly, but there is unemployment and few jobs at present, haveing lived in stroud, id say go for it, totally different places, but live in the right area and youre made. Also at least youll stil have a job, also check what expences the company may pay you, if any.
As for the g/f she may not get a job, depending on what she does, if its clerical , probably not , due to cutbacks at the finance companies in chester, plenty of care work jobs though.
