Anyone lived there? What's it like, how's the moving, what're taxes like etc? Friend of mine is looking at it and doesn't know anyone who's moved there.

I once spent a childhood holiday there, I remember it as the most nondescript and characterless country I ever been to, worse than Belgium, although I greatly enjoyed my holiday. Not much help I know, but at least it's bumped your thread before it drops off the page.

And here at no extra cost is a quote from Rosa Luxemburg, who shared a simular name to the country : "Those who do not move, do not notice their chains".

worse than Belgium

Jeeze, that's really saying something. Belgium is the most nondescript and characterless country I have ever visited. To imagine there is a worse place is just bewildering.

Well it's a lot smaller for a start. At least in Belgium you can say "yesterday I was there, today I am here", there's less of a chance of saying that in Luxembourg.

I remember waking up on a coach, driving through Antwerp about 6am.

I went back to sleep again, quickly.

Belgium was stunningly beautiful when we drove through on a sunny cold winter's day. Just wonderful.

Belgium is great; bikes, beer, chips, beautiful architecture, cyclocross and smoking.
Ace.

Have you asked your friend whether they have considered moving to Belgium atlaz ? ......it's starting to look as if that might be a better option.

Not many Luxy fans round here then!

I was in Luxembourg for about a year in the nineties, so I'm guessing that things have changed somewhat since then. However, there was quite a busy expat scene when I was there, with plenty of Europeans living in the city (especially Portuguese). Lots of bars and restaurants in the Grund area and some of them were rather good (I spent far too much time in them). Lovely countryside outside Luxembourg city itself especially in the Moselle area and out in the surrounding countries too.

I lived there for a year, working for the EU on some IT projects and I did find it quite a small place to live but it was pretty good. I didn't pay taxes there as I was paid in the UK.
The petrol and ciggies are cheap, the booze is incredibly cheap when buying from the hypermarkets and the decent rail links can get you into Germany, France, Belgium and Amsterdam in pretty short order.
The grund is where all the nightlife is and the club scene was pretty good when I was there. There are decent restaurants, gyms, an olympic size swimming pool. The airport is near the city and you can spend weekends flying around the continent.
I did have the advantage of having a lot of people from the same company out there at the same time so I wasn't dropped in at the deep end.
Downsides are:
yes, it is small
If you don't speak any of the languages you'll feel isolated
Rent is pretty high
The locals manners are pretty non existent.
Most of the offices are out on business parks so you'll need a car. That said the bus services are very good.

In isolation Luxembourg is quite dull - I used to work there now and then with my previous company. But if you consider that on the door step is some great Mountain Biking in Germany, you can drive to the alps for the weekend too. The pay is usually goo there too 😉

Weekend trip to nurburgring ring anyone? Train to Oktoberfest?
