Are there any downsides other than cost?
I have a grant vortex pro out the back door.
Upsides are - easy access , no room lost in the garage or house , easy to fit , if the boiler leaks thes leaks outside not in your house.
Downsides are .... Extended powercuts in cold snaps Have to drain the hotstore- its easy , its boiler off at spur , front cover off , switch off mains feed, push on hose turn drain to on.
My last three houses have had external boilers - 2 from worchester bosch and i fitted a grant here . As both the worchesters were smelly in use and next to my shed..... Both regularly serviced and i even queried it with the service guy - thats normal he said. Grant smells no where near as bad,
Just had a Worcester Bosch system boiler fitted at home. More space inside, no carbon monoxide poisoning worries, easier routing for our oil and hot water lines. System boiler means pump and filter gubbins are all inside our green box, so more space in the airing cupboard. Wouldn't really consider an internal one again...
Ar the installation costs more expensive? Are they less efficient due to being outside?
You do lose the benifit of having them inside when it comes to a hot box in your utility room . I never had that anyway it was in garage before.
Instalation costs shouldnt be any different. Mines needed 18 inches more pipe on inlet/outlet and feed
Hmm, might be worth a shout. It'd clear a space in the garage that I can use for tools and would help when we come to convert the garage into an office in the next few years...

Modern boilers are so well insulated, they're normally useless as a radiator.
