If you take two roofing slate pallet boxes(building sites burn them) take one apart and the strips of wood fit just nice in the gaps of the other, you end up with a big box basically, then screw a couple of gate hinges on and make a lid, two people can lift it about no problem.

Coal would get absolutely soaked in a wooden box.

One at my parents is concrete block built with rubble infill rendered over to create a funnel towards the front hatch and takes 2-3t. Old shed roof on top of it.

No longer in use as replaced the multifuel range with a pellet one.

I made one from leftovers of the shed build. Approx 1 metre cube. Frame from treated stud timber, covered with membrane then clapboard weatherproofing. Roof from some OSB plus a bit of reinforcing, with felt on. Full size door at front. Miniature shed, basically, although the roof is easily removable in easily order to load the thing right up to the top. Looks a fair amount like @espressoals post.

All our coal arrives in 20kg bags, so there's no load on the walls of the bunker.

Unsure if the wood is ethically grown or the felt was hand rolled by the virgins of Mount Olympus, you'd need to ask Wickes.

It has to be a pre-fabricated concrete one.
