Private is basicaly the lowest ranking US military rank, I'd be supprised if he can even spell his own name.
I assume "adding that he was being escorted back to America for disciplinary reasons" probably means he was heading back for a court martial for something reasonably serious.
So I would go with he figured defecting was preferable.
