'Personally ...and this is just my view if it Takes out my Ex Wife and her Mother in Law plus a few chavs, ill happily chomp a few nurofen and stay inside for a couple of weeks pal.
Ive had Man Flu....thats a killer.'
This could be the start of a great facebook group! (for once!)
Isn't you ex wife's mother-in-law your own mum, thats not very nice
Not if she's remarried.
how would you know you ex wifes new mother-in-law, what are the chances?
her indoors was introduced to someone today, went to shake hands and they refused "because of the epidemic"
You get married, fly to Mexico and the wife catches swine fever - what does this tell you?
her indoors was introduced to someone today, went to shake hands and they refused "because of the epidemic"
Give it a week and I expect more people might be doing the same. Especially as its now across multiple continents and is being transmitted between people.
I should imagine people flying back (or about to fly back) from Mexico are a tad nervous at the moment.
Dear god this is such a media beat up... one of the curses of the modern age is the media's incessant need to over report and over hype everything: BREAKING NEWS, NEWSFLASH, NEWS ALERT, WE CROSS NOW LIVE etc etc, it just pisses me off now.
The only date in recent history that I personally think justified this kind of reporting was 9/11...
Bad flu epidemics hit young adults hardest because they provoke our powerful immune systems into overreaction, so to stay healthy I'll be spending the next few weeks drunk and sleep-deprived to keep mine suppressed.
It's a tough job but someone has to do it.
Take it nobody wants to come out for a local ride with me then.
If you think you have it, you're supposed to stay at home and ring the NHS.
They'll send someone round to get you.
When they do, make sure the exhaust pipe of the van is not hooked up to the back cabin. They may be taking you straight round to a cremation.
One way to fix the problem ๐
(Sorry, paranoid thoughts when I heard the recommendation)
Over 3000 children died as a result of road traffic accidents in 2007 in UK alone. So far around 150 people worldwide have died because of this virus.
Comparable media reporting / hype ?
You didn't tell me your wife had swine fever Dave. Keep her away from me please. She's not touched those forks you've got for me has she?
actually its only about 12, anybody who died with a sniffle is now rumoured to be dead from pig flu, was quite funny hearing the news stations backtracking that one today.
We are due a full blown nasty as bout of something apparently they come round every 20 years. Unfortunately flu is now defined as similar to a hangover with a sniveling nose so loads of people will descend on A&E feeling a bit run down and come into contact with the one person who might actually have it!
Anyway time for a cheap holiday in Mexico!!
I had a bacon butty yesterday and I've got a runny nose this morning. Am I going to die ?
I have
Over 3000 children died as a result of road traffic accidents in 2007
Bollocks! - it was around 120
Over 3000 children died as a result of road traffic accidents in 2007 in UK alone
More media sensation! ๐
The number of deaths is around the 100 mark. The figure of 3000 is deaths *and* serious injuries.
Doh! Too slow! ๐
trailmonkey:I have
I'm jealous.
Trail monkey (aka kermit)
Help - I only half listen to the news but I think I might have swine flu since the last petrol station I filled up at was Texaco...
(stolen from SniffPetrol on Twitter)
how many pigs have died though.
will no-one think of the pigs!?
Here we are
Local news last night was calling it "the killer virus" but I think pigs will fly before we all die from pork flu.
just make sure you know your NHS number
all staff at my hospital have been issued with disposable masks and trained how to change them without contaminating oneself, scary times!
I'm still hiding under the table from Bird Flu.
Word from inside the health service is that this is very serious and the WHO (not daltry et al) are sh1tting themselves about it. I personally believe it isn't that serious (if it was then surely to contain it you would close Mexico) but a heated debate with my opinion suggests the media 'sensationalism' is closer to the reality than the health minister's comments
if it was then surely to contain it you would close Mexico
It's already out though so that wouldn't work
Mexico is attached to a big well known western country.
For once, I think that Michael O'Leary of Ryanair has got it right.
Too much hype from the media, built up by those who have something to gain from it.
An interesting viewpoint here:
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/04/29/Swine-Flu.aspx
I do believe the press are making the most of the situation but it's good news and you can't blame them. I do, however, think it is far more serious than bird flu.
I've just been advised by my director that a briefing will be sent out today to all colleagues advising them to stay at homw for 3 days if they have been in contact with anyone from the infected areas. If you work for a large organisation I'm sure a similar briefing will be heading your way.
AAGH Pandemic.. No that's not a good enough word any more.... Help! Media alert! We've run out of superlatives..
Shame the Avian flu was a media flop as well. Pandemic PANDEMIC PANDEMIC
Radio 4 was desparate to mutate it with Avian Flu (Nasty sniffle) this morning. Then we got the "Armageddon Virus". ARMAGEDDON!
armageddon out of here
so pork it isnt for dinner
Shame the Avian flu was a media flop as well.
"swine flu" is possibly an avian flu that has mutated with a human flu within pigs/swine, so mentioning Avian flu isn't entirely mental (though the 1997 "Bird Flu" was the H5N1 strain not H1N1).
"Bird Flu" was only a flop because it never mutated sufficiently to pass from human to human, so only 200 were estimated to have died.
Swine Flu has already managed the human-to-human transmission which is why the WHO raised the alert level about it, as it makes it more likely to develop into a pandemic (which it isn't yet, despite what the papers say).
Actually a friend of mine who is a fairly well regarded bio-chemist with a specialism in viruses was quite concerned about avian flu, and was involved in the development of the UK's response to it.
I'm fairly certain that she'll currently be providing a similar service for swine fever.
I suppose if it gets really bad and wipes out a few of us, then that will solve the unemployment problem.
The good news is that shares in undertaking companies should rise.
Look on the bright side people, at least the media has something else to focus on for the foreseable future other than the state of the world economy and as a result some sort of confidence may start to return along with the on set of spring and general sense of well being that would normally bring.
World Wide Pandemic ends world wide recession !!!!!
I think I've got swine flu - I'm coming out in rashers.
I was going to have enchiladas for dinner. Will it be safe ?
Interesting stat is that 'normal' flu in the UK kills around 12,000 a year and infects millions - all without a murmur from the press. Last year there were fears that an Australian flu strain was going to cause chaos in the UK over winter, but I don't recall people going into isolation wards when they sneezed after coming back from Oz.
So WTF is there such a media hoo-haa this time?
Avian flu is still a problem with cases being reported in Egypt.
The reason these cases are taken so seriously is that the mortality rate is high.
Nearly half of people who get Avian flu die compared to 12000 a year out of millions. Those 12000 are likely to be those who have other underlying problems or either very young or old, hence vaccination for those at risk but not the whole population.
Currently avian fu does not seem to pass between humans and the vaste majority of cases have a direct link to poultry.
Swine flu is a concern as it does appear to spread between humans however the mortality rate seems lower than for avian flu (but still higher than for seasonal flu)
Its a government conspiracy to cover up the previous conspiracies to knock off Princess Di, up the anti against Muslims, Blunkett claiming for home and away Kennomeat for his mutt, and for GB being an Alien.
I have no doubt whatsoever that someone will be along shortly to expose it in detail....... well not very much detail to be fair.
(Personally I thought the use of Pigs was pure genius, as it has potential for all sorts of directions as we move along on the inevitable bandwagon)
surival of the fitest! Im glad iv been trainning so much ๐
Less than 15 miles away from me, boarding up the house at the moment and heading out now to loot the local Somerfield.
what a load of media crap , the drugs companys must be loving it , they gonna make so much money from this , if and when people start dropping at the rate of say 1000 a day, thats the time to start flapping. flu it happens , it will always happen , there will never be a cure.
too many people anyway, it's either this or thermonuclear war, so you know it makes sense
