After a trip to Ericeria in Portugal and two trips to around Taghazout in Morocco I'd like to venture somewhere else for some sunshine surfing this year. Budget isn't huge (Morocco trip cost me around £800 all in for the week last year) and I'd like it to be around 25 degrees with some decent beginner to intermediate waves. Where would be on your hit list and what time of year?
polzeath. 😉
but mostly because its about 30mins from my house.
Tiree.
Fahrenheit, yeah?
Save up your money by going to Saunton and then when you've a bigger budget try the Sunshine coast (Happy Valleys, Caloundra etc), nice long waves and sea temps higher than air temps.
Bali.
Can you stretch that budget ?
I went to Sagres a couple of years ago, awesome place and will be going back.
If just going for a week I assume you want relitvely short haul?
Algarve in portugal could be a good option. Waves very definiately begginer to intermediate friendly, lots of beaches facing lots of directions, some beaches heaveir than others. A few wedge/point set-ups. Possibly need a guide to get the best out of it but lots of them around. Or jsut rent a hire car, somewhere to stay in Sagres and explroe.
Time of year to suit your temperature inclinations! summer very hot, water always colder than the air, 4/3 plus boots in winter, boardies in summer.
Or SW france in autumn like the rest of the world. but its a dream when its good.
Sri Lanka
Lanka's a good shout. Coast depends on time of year. For a quick winter one week hit go west down from Hikkaduwa dood (Columbo and taxi). Arugam side takes a bit more getting to (which is why I've not been though I'd like to). You're surfing over coral and with turtles etc, plenty of intermediate waves to be found.
Canaries are good for winter sun too though wetsuit needed (in Feb I've alternated between shorty and full suit, but most of the locals are in the latter). I've only done Lanza (good), Gran Canaria (not so good but conditions part of that), and dirty Fuerte (got back ten days ago after and epic epic swell and just rebooked for December, make of that what you will). I'm pretty shite at actual surfing but manage to get some okay waves in all these places.
The other recommendations are all good, obviously. I surf the NE so they're all warm to me. But having done early season portugal and spain a few times, it's not really winter sun and warm water.
If not short haul the other option is Costa Rica, not that I've been there but meant to be accessible, fantastic intermedaite waves and perfect temperatures.
I've surfed Costa Rica. Amazing. North West coast at the Nicoya peninsula is fabulous. Look up Zopilote surf camp- if it's still running, it was a great location.
Bali is nice too, I preferred C-R though, more laid back.
Sri Lanka?
Cheap as, erm curry, and very much betterer than South India (and less scary)
Accom can be had for 2300SLR a night on the beach ..
South Africa is amazing. No jet lag, great waves and inexpensive. Lots of wave to suit. Cape Town to Jeffreys Bay is a great trip and lots of easier point breaks at J Bay other than supertubes. Best time to go is our Spring-Autumn.
Best place I've been to is Maldives and Hawaii (the easier waves), but much more expensive. Bali was good, but a long and expensive flight
Thanks for the input so far, keep it coming. I can see my weekend being filled with plenty of searching for flights and accommodation.
El Tunco, El Salvador
^^ take a gun 🤣
My Mrs did some VSO work there in 03’ and was held at gunpoint for four days 🤣🥴
She was a bit hungry when they let her and the other four go...
Anyone mentioned SoCal yet??
Thurso. Kelvin yeah?

what's a beginner/intermediate want with a big wave board?
🤣
A proper gun
depends on what level of accomodation you're trying to get to. I managed to get to Oahu for under £500 return - if you're happy in a bunkhouse you could do that for £800 (was an epic trip).
Otherwise, sri lanka as mentioned, indo if you can blag some very cheap flights
El Tunco has security around the village, blokes with guns and swords. I've been twice no problems, had more hassle with thieves in Portugal. Having said that, you wouldn't leave anything on the beach if you want to see it again.
