Not much there 🙂

Work, innit. Sadly cannot drive.

Not much there

Apart from snow and trees, two things I absolutely love 🙂 Hopefully I'll be able to get out and about.

Looks like I'll have to drive to London, fly to Stockholm and stay there overnight.

I'm there reasonably often and would use the train. Trains from Arlanda (i.e. the main Stockholm airport - platforms are under the terminal) are reasonably reliable/ quick/ direct and are comfortable and spacious if you want to do work etc. Check prices on sj.se, and book in advance as prices go up. I've never used a plane but the airport "in" Sundsvall is a bit of a trek from town. As above, how come you're going? Not a massive amount to recommend it as a tourist destination...

edit - just to add, you can do night trains direct from Arlanda if that helps with timings etc. Might give you a bit more free time if that's what you're after. Not sure what I'd recommend in the immediate vicinity of town though. Åre or Östersund are easy train trips to touristy places if you're after ski/ snow (DH or XC), 2.5 - 4 hour trip each way though.

The flights work out nicely for an overnight stay in Stockholm if I leave from London. Not that great on the way home though.

This is for work btw. Would be there 3 days a week until March.

Train is 3 hours odd though isn't it?

There is a little ski slope overlooking the town 🙂

trains are quite slow no? (I'm in Gavle next week & will grab the train but that's a bit closer to Arlanda)

There's various ski options as you'd expect. DH starts at Södra Berget not sure about XC tracks but there will be loads, and illuminated as well – see here for info Not used them or those in Helsiki, though sure they're fine enough for someone used to UK facilities 😉 Sundsvall isn't actually all that snowy or cold though, more chilly, grey and damp IMO. Some good hockey clubs in that part of the world if you're interested in local “culture”.

Depends, if you get the "fast train" it's pretty bearable (assuming it's on time etc.) as the seating etc is pretty comfortable. I wouldn't bother flying, and when I get to change in Sundsvall I still have another few hours drive/ train ahead of me so I'm not particularly interested in making the journey longer than it has to be.

Thing is I want to get there and back as fast as possible because I've got family to get back to and a job to do. Getting the train adds another 2 hours it looks like. Having said that, it might help me get to Stockholm in the evening in time for a decent flight to London. On the way out, if I stay in Stockholm on Tuesday night I can get a plane at 8am and be there at 9.

@ molgrips, I totally get that. I was just suggesting that if you're arriving in Sweden via Arlanda the train connection may be more useful than looking for well-timed flights because although the train is slower there are more frequent departures. For me it is always the case that the train works out faster and easier in total journey time(and I prefer not to fly due to environmental considerations), but it obviously depends on your connections.
