Go on recommend something.

Like Sci-Fi of the Ian M Banks type.

Random other stuff including cycling writing.

Have you read China Mieville? He's put out some excellent stuff over the past 10 years. Productive guy, so there are a lot of different books to choose from. Quality can be a bit variable as a result - think he will write a real masterpiece at some point though.
The Scar is his best IMHO - some superb writing and story telling in that one.

M John Harrison's stuff is very good, Banks mentioned him in one of his recent blog posts. Like Banks he produces both hard sci-fi, and fairly brutal contemporary fiction. His short stories are a good place to start. Or get hold of the proper stuff: early Ballard.

It's [i]Iain[/i] Banks, btw.
