We will be in touch
Hi all,
I'm after a down or "other" insulated & waterproof jacket for winter walks etc.
I'm keen on the Arcytrex fission SV but don't really want to spend that sort of money unless absolutely nessesary
The RAB Interno shield also looks like it could work, it's new so no one locally has them in stock, and no real reviews online .
Anything else I should consider?
north face triclimate.
Personally I'd buy them separately as it's more flexible and you have much more choice. Just get a water proof jacket and a down / synthetic puffer thing.
I have separate jackets but want a combined insulated waterproof.
My montane minimus will go over most things but I like buying jackets and I have a niche to fill 🙂
Aren't nothface a bit - fashion and ur, poo ?
I'm not sure why I have this impression of them but I do.
Lots of ski jackets that would perform that function.
I've got a Bonfire snowboard jacket I bought in a sale, lovely two-tone grey, very waterproof, but it doesn't get much wear as it's never quite cold enough; I usually resemble a boil-in-the-bag human when I do wear it!
Guess I could just wear a long-sleeve Howies Marino base shirt, though...
North Face Makilidas jkt is good, used to be called the Makalu Insulated Jacket. Most decent brands will do something of this ilk.
You don't want down in this kind of jacket, useless when it gets wet. And Goretex is a bit of a waste of money as the level of breath ability will be governed by the insulation not the membrane.
fashion?????
you said it was for dog walking.
who gives a shyte about looking fashionable when dog walking?
I've been wearing a paramo velez for the last few winters which isn't padded / insulated but has two layers making it a lot cosier than regular goretex shells and is more than warm enough on its own most of the time, with a fleece under its super toasty.

However I've just bought a paramo torres for being less active outdoors (usually standing around for 12 hours trying not to yawn to much during film shoots) which has a synthetic down-like fill that still insulates if it gets wet
Paramo stuff is excellent

You misunderstood.
Generally I see northface stuff as a shitty fashion brand that has sold out, similar to hunter.
I don't want fashion brand - over price tat thanks. Unless they are now making decent stuff again?
This will be worn over a long sleeve t shirt or base layer, only.
Synthetic or down will make no difference as the outer needs to be waterproof.
Not a fan of Paramo thanks, I've had stuff previously and didn't like the fit or its ability.
North face McMurdo parka, de-facto coat for film crews on location in winter. I make do with a Rab down jacket and a montane e-vent over the top. Do you really need the insulation if you are walking and generating warmth not standing around?
Paramo +1
I've got a velez adventure smock, and a synthetic jacket whose name I can't remember. Toasty and dry 🙂
Crux. Expensive but the best jacket I own
Just get a very warm synthetic belay jacket, they're designed to keep you warm whilst stood around in winter conditions
I do agree with others that you can probably get what you need with a thick fleece and a waterproof. It's not what you asked for but will keep you dry and warm and is flexible.

No. They branched out into selling their stuff to poseurs, but it's still proper gear.
Here's someone climbing Nanga Parbat in overpriced high street fashion gear:
However I would seriously question putting down under Goretex. It won't wick, so unless it's extremely cold and dry, ie you're in the arctic or something, the down will get very wet and end up useless even if you are just dog walking.
I have a McMurdo parka, which I got 10 years ago for silly money and it was great in Finland and Sweden but way to warm to wear over here.
It is still like brand new, will be wearing it when I go to Finland in January.
Burghers Thunder installed jacket may be an option for you. Or Jack Wolfskin do down parkas (however these, and the North Face are very heavy pieces of kit and wouldn't really suit hill walking). If it's cold enough fro down it's too cold for rain. Just saying...
As for

That is just how you see them. Doesn't make it true.
They have never stopped making decent stuff, nothing they make is "tat", and just because they've got a great marketing team that's moved them into a desirable brand on the high street doesn't mean they've sold out.
You can hardly blame TNF for wanting to take High st poseurs' money from them, can you? I'm sure they collectively have far more money than genuine mountaineers.
Generally when brands go down this rout the quality dresses and the price increases or stays the same.
French connection were a good brand making pretty good quality gear until the F C U K thing started, hunter did the same.
My thoughts are based on seeing some of the quality of the TNF stuff at two retail outlets. It's was pretty shonky to be honest. It could be that they punt out 2nds at the retail outlet centres? Dunno.
Some decent suggestion I'll follow up on, acteryx still looks like the best option for quality and price.
just get the arcteryx. you'll be cheating yourself otherwise. you're worth it.
TNF do make a lot of dross at the bottom end of the market. However, I did buy a GTX jacket from them this year as it was cheaper than the other brands and pretty well specced.

Were you looking at the cheap stuff or the expensive stuff? I have a fair bit of TNF (there used to be a factory outlet near my in-laws) and it's been fantastic.
been using a north face apex soft shell for 6 years, which is far far better than any cycling specific stuff I have been unfortunate to own.
also use their summit series base layers and mid layers. again far far better than endura/altura stuff at the same price range, and indeed better than ice breaker merino stuff at twice the price.
At the lower end of the market, TNF stuff is no better than anything you'll find in Mountain Warehouse, Tog24, Trespass and the likes. Retailers do, however, get a really good margin on it and so will favour it over other brands, even pointing you towards it when something better is available. They also favour it by giving it prominent display space (it'll often be the first "brand" you see when you go into a shop).
The marketing has worked. Folk will walk in off the street and only look at the TNF displays, even asking for items you don't stock when you have a cheaper/better/identical product with another badge on (Jack Wolkskin seem to have recently started to challenge TNF in this).
However, TNF still do some really good stuff so it's not right to dismiss it all as fashion "tat". The Summit series in particular is worth looking at if you're into high-end technical clothing.
I would look at ski/snowboard jackets, usually pretty waterproof and windproof, usually well insulated, lots of pockets for poo bags and can be had pretty cheap if you look at past seasons gear.
I got a Nike 6.0 waterproof down (puffa style) snowboard jacket from TKMaxx for £35. Only needed a tshirt under it whilst snowboarding in the Pyrenees last winter!!
Ok so I'll put tnf back on the list.
I have an older TKmaxx'd Montane belay jacket with synthetic insulation for walking the dog. Its quite long and warm with big detachable hood but will soak through after half hour or so if it pi55ing down. I wanted something I could just grab with only a tshirt underneath when Im bolting out the house. I had a similar jacket from Howies but the collar just wasnt right, its pointed into my lips and the zip was rubbish so got a refund.

It doesn't help that they used to use the sub brand name "Summit Series" for their cheapo toss range a few years back ie plastic bag waterproof jackets with zero breathability.
