So I've just taken delivery of my lovely new 15" Retina MBP, now without a CD drive I figured that I'd best look at using the new iTunes Match service, signed up then looked for the option on my (fully loaded with music) 64gb iPhone4s, clicked enable iTunes Match on the phone, put it down but as I was putting it down a dialogue window appeared and closed... ...so I look on my MBP, no new music on the computer, check the phone WHATTHE****!?! Now the only music I have on both iDevices is that which I have purchased from the apple store and that alone. And it didn't just hide the music on my iPhone, IT DELETED IT ALL!!!

The really funny bit is that the 15" Retina Macbook Pro doesn't have a CD Drive, so the choices I have are:

1) Go and buy a superdrive and spend the next three days importing all my music AGAIN
2) Buy it all again (despite owning it on CD already) from iTunes
3) Download it all from illegal file sharing sites

What do you suggest??

3)

I hate iTunes. It'll randomly happen again. You'll see.

In itunes on the mac, under STORE, in the LH panel, can you see an entry for itunes match? If you've set things up then it should say you've x,000 songs in iCloud, with some brief instructions on how to access them?

Oh, and this has bugged me for a long time - it's Parchman Farm, not Parchment Farm. 🙂

how did the tunes get on your iphone in the first place though - surely they're all already on whatever computer you were using with that phone

Yeah, I think you need to set it up on the computer with all the music on first - it basically scans the collection, matches it and uploads anything it can't find in the iTunes store. The iPhone is just a 'receiver' - it can't match songs or anything like that.

The service is great once it's all working if that is any consolation....

The old computer that had all my music on died, the new mac is a replacement (thanks Legal and General!!)

heh heh I know the song you're referring to Vinnyeh, and yes, you're quite right there is a version where it's sung as Parchmen Farm, its rong!

So restore from a backup you'd taken of the old computer.

If you didn't have one - oh well, everyone learns at some point.

I refuse to use iTunes Match. I won't allow 320Kb files to be downgraded to 256Kb. And the cost is more than I'm prepared to pay, having 14,000+ tracks in my library.

You need to log into it. I've had a few panic moments and in a totally normal (but against the popular perception) experience, apple make a shit job of explaining how to sort it out. Got all the music on your PC and connect itunes match? Prepare for duplicates.
