Last year in halls my lads stuff was covered under our home insurance, this year he is going in to private rented accommodation so our home insurance no longer covers his things, any ideas on where to get reasonable insurance? Endsleigh have quoted £350 for a laptop, phone, bike and enough to cover his other things, that is 50% more than my home and contents!!

Why not just get normal home contents insurance? I imagine student specific will have a nice premium added?

50% more risk?

TBH, Endsleigh were the cheapest 20 years ago, I wouldn't be surprised if they are still the cheapest now.

I've generally found that the insurance policies tailored especially for students, women, the elderly or whatever always cost a lot more expensive than the more general providers they're claiming to be cheaper than. Going back a long time but - when I was a student Endsleigh was not only expensive but had some pretty zany clauses - for instance if anything was in a bag or box they'd only cover 25% of the contents - so 'camera' was covered to full value but 'camera bag containing camera etc' would only be covered at a fraction of its value.

Maybe just try one of the regular comparison sites, or rather try a few - some sites ask more questions than others and there can sometime be a key question that your answer can drive the price down on.

Certainly shop around but be mindful of the fact that many 'normal' household policies will exclude HMO's and student lets.
