Maybe someone can help. For years I have uploaded stuff to Strava by plugging the various Garmins in and then up loading them by using the + on the Strava dashboard then clicking Garmin. No I can't do it. It wants me to go via Garmin Express or Connect which is a nuisance as I have to open to bits of software. Any idea why or how to revert to my normal, quicker, way?
Also does "following" someone automatically mean that I get all their activities when I open Strava. It is interesting to occasionally see what mates have been up to but most of the time I don't care and certainly don't want to be shown every ride. Can I block the info without un following (this surely isn't a real word) them?
Can't you just click the upload by file button in Strava, and navigate to the Activities folder of your Garmin?
Assuming you mean uploading via a web browser? When I click the + I can select "File" from the "Device | File | Manual | Mobile" menu on the left of the screen.
The easiest way to synch though, is to install the Gamin Connect app on your phone and add your devices to that - then it synchs automatically if in range.
And, yes, if you follow someone you get all of their activities in your feed.

Express is the Garmin update stuff where you can download maps, firmware etc.
Connect is the rides, routes, activities etc. Easiest option is to download the Connect app to your phone, pair it with Garmin and then give it permission to access your Strava. It only needs to be done once. After that, the app sits in the background and can safely be ignored. You can plan your routes on Strava then - in the background - they'll push to Connect and from there direct to your device next time you turn it on. Same in reverse - finish a ride, save on the device then it'll upload to Connect and from there direct to Strava. No need to plug anything in.
I did what you describe for my previous Garmin which I had to order in a hurry for a cycle tour when my existing one gave up the ghost about 3 days before I was due to go so I didn't have time to play around pairing apps etc.
My current Garmin, I did actually take time to sit down with it and get it all paired and synced. And the auto upload is much easier than plugging it in every time!
My strategy is to have my watch sync to Garmin Connect. This is set to auto share to Strava but with activities visible only to me by default. I then set to visible, in strava, when I’ve added photos etc.
Surely you sync the Garmin to your Connect account and that then automatically syncs to Strava?
Why use a Garmin and avoid the software it provides that does the send to Strava automatically?
Doing it that way would save opening any software...
You can mute someone in Strava if you don't want to see their activities. Find an activity of theirs, click the 3 dots on the right of their name and choose mute
My garmin (530) uploads to connect and then strava automatically when it connects to my home wi fi, just turn it on when I get home and it shows up on strava 20 seconds later. To be honest I can't remember the last time I opened the connect app but it's worked like I described for years without issue
OP: which specific Garmin(s) do you have?
As everyone above has stated, syncing via Garmin Connect app on a phone has been the most efficient way of getting data out of the devices and has been for at least five years or so. It's only older devices which didn't have this capability (unless you're not using something designed for cycling...?)
You can mute someone in Strava
Can I mute the person who tells me 'Kudos for logging another ride!' every time I upload? Seriously irritating.

That's just Strava isn't it? I get the same - "kudos for logging a ride, go check out those stats". And then the automatic AI summary telling me that I crushed it.
I can ride to the cafe and get a summary telling me that I crushed that cafe ride with an awesome 3rd best time on "final climb to the cafe" segment, go me.
It's the relentless positivity of it all that gets me. And the sheer amount of crushing going on. 🙄

Not individually, but if you're not bothered in general you can turn off app notifications in the settings.

@crazy-legs - you can turn off the cod AI comments by going to an activity, scroll down to Athlete Intelligence, select "Give Feedback" and then "Leave Athlete Intelligence"
Ah, but you are assuming that the various Garmins have blue tooth/wifi. They don't. You are also assuming a mobile phone. Why the devil would I use such a thing? One does exist but I can't be bothered to find it, switch it on, look for another cable etc.
Cheers for trying though.
What is peeving me is that this is a recent development. It has been fine for years. Hmmm
I hate the kudos thing as well. Most of what I dump on Strava isn't something I am especially proud of. The daily commute? A morning with my mates? Nah.
You could stop using it and use something else? Depends on what you use it for (and if you pay for it)...
I have to do the manual upload connecting my 810 to my computer as it refuses to work with the Garmin phone app. Never had an issue, just have to select the correct file on the unit as it appears as a USB drive on the computer. Doesn't bother me as it also means it gets charged! The auto-synch via Connect is very good though, I do miss it but not enough to get a new unit.

I did that to get rid of the 'looks like you rode up a bit and down a bit and slightly further/ less far than your last ride' AI insights. Hasn't got rid of the notifications, and I can't see anywhere in the PC settings to turn them off.
It's fine though, I'll be going 'free' when my sub runs out in July, I just use it for mileage and elevation totals now.

Kudos for asking another question! You crushed it!

progress , your doing things the old fashioned way.
the modern way is much less hassle - i know you cant see it but it really is .
be like me moaning my forerunner 205 isnt supported anymore. When in reality its 20 years old.

This. Your attitude to your phone is much my attitude to having to stop what i am doing and go to a computer, start it, plug in the device, navigate to the website, hit upload, navigate to files etc etc.
Compared to just "exist near both devices" and abracadabra...
i finish my ride - press stop on the watch ... save.
hey presto it appears in garmin connect & strava - and a whole host of other places if i so wished.... hell theres probably a plug in somewhere to put it direct onto onlyfans even ..... without me touching any other hardware.
Compared to the retro pain i feel everytime i want to put a route on my etrex - finding a working computer plugging it in , plotting the route and uploading it manually .
I record rides using the Mi Fitness app on my phone and when I finish it automatically uploads to Strava. I did a ride on Saturday and when I looked at Strava it said I'd done nearly 10x the distance, in the same time, and flagged it as being wrong. Yes it's wrong! The original app shows 10.3km, Strava says 96.8km, weird...
