Looking at a car on Gumtree - right condition, price and spec. Only problem is the seller states up front that it is not in his name but he is selling with the permission of the owner who owes him money. He states he has it in writing that the owner agrees to this and the car is not on the v register as stolen. Seemingly the owner has emigrated and cannot be contacted.
How can I go about checking providence?
Does he have the V5?
One of the AA checks?
Already done an HPI and it is clear - says he has had it for two months and is "awaiting" the V5 being posted to him
Run for the hills.
I may be wrong, but gumtree+strange story is enough for me to flee.
Guy may be legit, but you are taking the risk.
HPI gives you a guarantee if it goes wrong
There aren't many places you can emigrate to where you can't be contacted.
I wouldn't touch it unless I could speak directly with the original owner to confirm the story and the written permission is worthless as you are unable to confirm who wrote it.
Just because it's not showing up as stolen on the HPI doesn't make any less of a risk. It might be a friends, partners, ex-partners or bosses car that he has legitimate access to; but not ownership of.
HPI will only give you a guarantee if you have the V5 number and issue date so RUN!
Perhaps if you pay by cheque?
Not your cheque but maybe you could tell him that you have the permission of the account holder.
Where on gods earth has the owner emigrated to, Accrington*?
*apparently according to watsontony all forms of communication are blocked in that particular corner of the universe.
I doubt the HPI guarantee would pay out if it wasn't bought from the actual owner.
I sold a mates car just like this after he emigrated to New Zealand a couple of years ago, first potential buyer couldn't get his head around the (even with being able to contact the owner) the second was more trusting and bought it. In this case it was all legit but honestly I wouldn't be the buyer in those circumstances...
Edit: in my case I had the V5, the lack of a V5 in the case above really does make me think don't touch it with a bargepole
How can I go about checking providence?
He has the WHOLE V5, and the car is at the registered address or no deal, as per the Police and DVLA advice. If he doesn't have them, he's most likely a dealer trading illegally.
Leave it there's plenty of cars for sale reg keeper may not be the owner to many things to go wrong with that
If he's had it for two months and the rightful owner states it's his to sell on then why not put it in his name first? Sounds too good to be true etc.....
Do not buy a car without the V5c.
as coopersport1 says above.
As De Niro once said - "Whenever there is any doubt, there is no doubt." 😀
Much as above , no v5 walk away
It's alright you can apply for a new one - walk away
I've applied but its not arrived - walk away
Could be a cloned car , or anything else odd
Or could be fine but do you want to take the risk with your money
Is his name Abiola Ogundesun?
