What a life to have led!
He must have had some feline genes as he had cheated death a fair few times.
A life lived to the full, he can rest now.
Met him back in 2000. An absolute gent, lovely bloke and really approachable.

That's sad news, at least he can now go and join all his friends in the racing circuits in the sky.
Oh this is sad but one of the true greats and the epitome of the true gentleman racer.
Sad loss, but what a life and a truly fantastic driver. His 1955 Mille Miglia win was one of the all time great drives. 99mph average !!!

Absolute legend - greatest driver to never win a World Championship.
Remember seeing him a few times racing historics - he could still get a move on.
And also the only driver to still be allowed to wear his 50's style helmet.

I must have met him on an off day, this was not my experience. Still, many people who achieve greatness are driven (excuse the pun) and self-centred

Great driver but aloof and generally unpleasant.
He can't have been all bad as it seems a lot of us seem to have met him... I found him to be a great bloke. Much nicer than I'd be if constantly pestered by fans wherever I went (as if!).
I just read the book written by his assistant Val Pirie - quite an interesting insight into his world. He seemed a very focused and busy individual so I can see how people brushed up against different aspects of his character at different times.

I used to see him around a lot as his son was at school with me. Have always regretted never having had a chat with him.
Very sorry to hear but he had a life indeed! A great racing hero for me. Met him twice, once at the 1998 Goodwood with my father and we all had a great chat for twenty minutes about the old days. Again a couple of years later. He was charming on both occasions.
Not sure I'd read this before - Jenks' fascinating account of the Mille Miglia. (The link does work, regardless of what the thumbnail suggests)
