I thought the Klingons are better a than the previous iterations which looked like they had a Cornish Pasty stuck to their foreheads.

Agreed, they looked actually a bit menacing instead of biker-leather camp
While the Klingons are a new take on it, the chat was a bit grating. I found when they were talking it just seemed to drag (not complaining about the subs, it just seemed they were constantly trying to make up words that sounded a bit klingony.
The Klingon ships weren't much to look at either, not like the iconic ships of old, whereas the federation ships were very similar to what we normally see - but I'll give it a chance, the good far outweighed the bad and hopefully it'll be a nice modern, grittier Star Trek
Aye the Klingon dialogue bits were just dull, know what you mean I watch subtitles all the time, they just over did it.. Their look was good I think and generally I thought it was a decent enough start to the new series. It's just getting going though so we'll see where we get to after half a dozen EPs and it settles in. Good enough but hopefully will get better.
That next gen trailer thing on the previous page is awesome! 😆
Sums up The Orville from what I've seen so far. https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2017/09/29/seth-macfarlanes-the-orville-is-the-star-trek-show-fans-have-been-waiting-for/#6e5707206da8
Brakes: you nailed it. I felt more for the poor outcast Klingons than the moronic star trek crew. just terrible management decisions all the way through. I would be a better star fleet captain and I'm lower IT management.
just watched the first ep of the orville, by god that was shite.

Isn't that the point of the set up? Star Fllet at this point have become explorers and settlers, no Klingons in living memory, afriad to kick off trouble and used to dealing with people throwing spears etc.
So just watched the 3rd Episode there. Conclusion, it's gonny be class! 🙂
I think it's fairly obvious the klingon war won't last forever and they'll join starfleet to fight a common cause and it'll develop beyond that.. I mean the ship is called discovery for a reason, and the show's not called star trek:klingon war.
They've got me i think! 😆 Then again I do love all things star trek!
Nah I think the war is going to carry on there, Capt Malfoy is going to make things interesting
Would be surprised if it lasts much beyond this series. But aye it'll be a big fixture in this one. Agree the new captain seems like he'll be good!
just checked 15 episodes by the looks of it! 🙂
Cheers for the reminder now sign up to Netflix again ready for Stranger Things 2.

re-watched the first again the other week, really looking forward to that too.
Was glad I watched episode 3, despite 1 and 2 being a bit mleh. Its getting good. Dark as well. Alienesque.....
EPISODE 3 AMAZEBALLS
EP3 was a big improvement
Just watched episode 3. Reminded me so much of aliens in places. Thumbs up!
Watched 1 last night a bit all over the place while they introduce everyone.
Jason Isaacs rather stole the show.
Trek, like pretty much everything else is improved considerably when Damon Lindelof is kept away from the script.
Well all caught up now it's starting to show potential.
Big cheesefest this week. 🙁
Big cheesefest this week.
Also didn't enjoy this week. Didn't think it was particularly cheesy, just not very engaging or entertaining.
I'm also getting annoyed by the Klingon language.
Not even when they tell you what the Ripper is or what they do with it?
Minor spoiler alert.
I quite liked this week's EP, it's turning out quite well. There's definitely a lot of BSG influence there, if I have to criticise on anything it's the clunkiness of the Klingon dialogue and that they're paper-thin baddies plot-wise (it's revealed what happened to Capt Georgiou). Of course, being Trek, a specific problem is solved with understanding and empathy which makes a welcome change from the usual tiresome gung-ho sci-fi antics.

was alright, I'm no convinced with the klingons dialogue though, it makes you switch off, hope to god they invent universal translators soon! 😆
Oh yeah Klingones talking, I was trying to eat

Gagh?
where are they going with the fungal drive thing? How will they join up the inevitable disaster with the fact that nobody in star trek 'after' this ever mentioned the technology.
I like it overall but I can't stand the Klingons.

or in later series shuttlecraft don't have warp drives but do in this "earlier" series.
Consistency was never Star Trek's strongest point (other than, until she died, you knew Majel barrett was going to turn up)
I like the way that the Klingons speak in Klingon, it shows an impressive level of commitment and a willingness to take risks from the producers if the show. It also helps to flatter their acting ability! 🙂
Consistency was never Star Trek's strongest point
It's science fiction, not an attempt to create a completely consistent alternative future universe. I for one am glad they're correcting some of the silly stuff that in previous series was missing only because they didn't have the effects budget.
Not sure about this quantum fungus travel, feels a bit like the midiclorians in Star Wars. Also somewhat disappointed that they couldn't be arsed to create a new baddie (like they did with the Borg) and are regurgitating the Klingon war again.
On the plus side they're sticking with the policy of killing off security officers so at least they're respecting some traditions.
I've liked it so far.
Not quite sure about the super-sentient shroom eating dust mite - still not sure where it came from, but it does remind me of something in the original Star Trek series.
They should still try and weaponize it's claws though - hope they don't forget that bit.
It will be interesting to see what the anaemic Klingon does now he's stranded on the dead ship.

Because despite being set vaguely in the original time line, it's for all intents and purposes a reboot and they can do what they like now and what happens after is unwritten.
Fair enough for them. I just wish they'd come up with something new instead of reboots. If it's Trek, set it way in the future, or not do it from the Federation point of view, do a series based on some other aliens instead of humans. Or just do a totally new sci-fi and forget the name.
Well it’s just getting worse I reckon I’m done with it. Annoying characters and comedy warp driving water bears.
Well the water bear is gone, the engineer is going to get going and something is happening, I'll give it the season
I thought last nights episode was the best of the series. It wasnt all about Michael, we got a "character" from canon, more of Isaacs and the mirror incident starts us down the path of why they're not using the spore drive in TOS.
I'm still in the alright camp. Not mind blowing anyhow, the Klingons are crap.
Am I the only person in the known universe that is bothered by the fact that they dropped the F-Bomb?! Twice!
No there is a thread about it too.
I really enjoy it. It feels like a cross between Voyager and the later episodes of DS9, when they were fully at war with the Jem'Hadar.
I agree that the re imagination of the Klingons is a bit of a let down. They were well developed in TNG so I don't see why they needed to rip that up. Their space suits/armour are cool though.

So you are the person the STW swear filter is there to "protect?
The big question is; how did the tardigrade manage to rehydrate itself in open space?
because it was freeeeeeeeee
I'm now up to episode four of The Orville. It's like Star Trek, but betterer.

you should probably stop watching now or your question list will get very long!
The new series started well but every subsequent episode of Discovery is making it harder to like.
Yes I can hear you Clem Fandango
new episode was better.muppetWrangler - Member

I'm liking the captain more and more, devious and determined
new episode was better.
I'm finding the quality of the episodes to be inversely proportional to the quantity of space fungus content
tbh, that's 7 episodes, I'm thinking 5 or 6 at a push out of 10 is about as much as I'd rate this.
Been watching both Discovery and Orville and both now are like stepping back in time 20 years pulling ideas and re jigs of episodes from the Next Generation .. Just expected Kelsey Grammer to appear in the last episode 😉
I actually thought Stellar's dad was Kelsey Grammer at the end.
then I thought it was John Lithgow from 3rd Rock from the Sun.
I think today's episode was the best of the series. I love a good ground hog day story.
Been watching one or two episodes an evening just finished the groundhog day one. Really enjoying it so far. Finding it no less enjoyable than NextGen/DS9/Voyager. It's definitely Star Trek, put of the fun is criticising it. Some of the new Klingons remind me of the graphics in the original Half Life game, and some at first glance I almost mistook for Ferengi.
Started watching Orville too, the opening scene in ep2 was brilliant, but I've put it on hold to watch this.
That's us on the break, I liked yesterdays episode, and tbh I think that's us really just starting now, without wanting to spoil it, we've got to the point of these episodes now, and we'll looking like we're in for a voyageresque type thing now? I never did think the early premise would last forever.
Overall been hit an miss, but I think it's starting to settle. I do still like it.
I hope the next episode isn't just a return to normal space.
Voq/Tyler. Yes or no?
Just done nine episodes in two nights, best Star Trek since the original.

dunno, something going on anyhow but if voq why subservient to the other yin?
captain, good guy or alternate universe bad guy "going home"? well mibbe no bad guy, but different point of view/mission.
It's ok, not the most gripping series I've watched. If they dropped it, I wouldn't be bothered.
We've liked it so far. Something the family can watch together. Though the flashback "interigation" bits confused the 9 yr old.
Tryig to find a family series on netfix or a series thats not dark and moody is getting more difficult. Netflix turning emo/ goth?
Its a 15 rated its said the f word and sworn and latest episode had a flashback of alien sex rape - your version of family entertainment is definitely different from mine.
I now pre watch them and skip the bits that are not suitable - FWIW i am fairly certain it started out as a 12 till the last episode even with the swearing but Dr Who or like the other instalments/definitely family suitable it is not
Still enjoying it though
I'm still lukewarm about Discovery. Despite the billing and Sonequa Martin-Green and Anthony Rapp both being absolutely outstanding, the script writing leaves much to be desired, particularly where the Klingons are concerned.
TBH I expected a lot more, especially with people like Nicholas Meyer onboard.

Are we watching the same series, she is mediocre at best and has the most weird running style I've ever seen....
It was undecided after the first couple of episodes but its gradually grown on me. A few things still grate like Saru - hes just annoying and I'm still not convinced by the Klingon make over, especially the way they murrrrderrrrrrrr evvvverrrry sylabbbbbbllllle.
But overall I've enjoyed it

Yes the latest episode was too much with the flash backs and pre viewing might havd to be done. As for the language. You hear worse at school pick up, in a family pub or out shopping. Other than that he has enjoyed, if not understood all of it.
Strangley he was more scared of doctor who than star trek.
Well that ended abruptly. Only 9 episodes? Or has the series been split into two parts? The next episode is being shown on the 9th January
Yep. That's the mid-season break. Quite common with US TV series.
a flashback of alien sex rape
If my hunch is right then that's not what those flashbacks showed.
Well that ended abruptly. Only 9 episodes? Or has the series been split into two parts? The next episode is being shown on the 9th January
American scheduling, two 9 episode half seasons with a big 'ol gap in the middle.
Ah well, at least it ended on an exciting note! Very Voyager-y 🙂
Sonequa Michael Burnham is in general rubbish as an actor. And agree about the running (the director/dir. Of photography should also shot for allowing it through).
And in the last episode (SPOILER) WHEN THE guy runs really fast....speeding up the frame rates is just not acceptable.

The problem with having Saru running is that the actor has to wear weird shoes that would prevent him from really doing so. He also has a really strange walking gait as a result.
Well, it was doing quite well, got me interested even though I don't really like Trek, then tonight's episode - wtf? Somehow managed to jump the shark during Christmas.
Made sense to me.
Hell yes!
Loved the "chief engineers" accent too 😉
It made sense, but it was drivel 🙁
Watched last night and found myself surfing on the phone. Got properly bored.
Watched around five or six of them but found it very frustrating.
I must have been spoiled by high-quality hour-long TV dramas which take their time unfolding a complex story with rich characterisation.
These feel really rushed, fast-forwarding over huge plot points and using only broad brush strokes on most of the characters.
Very telling that I found the science stuff annoying as well, because I don't normally care if the sci bit of sci-fi is nonsense.
I have a love hate thing with the alternate universe done well it's great done badly and everyone else is the exact opposite of who they are.
These feel really rushed, fast-forwarding over huge plot points and using only broad brush strokes on most of the characters.
In some ways it's the rush that is bringing a group of people together in a time of stress and war. Not everyone knows who the others are and what they are about. We are not meant to know.
Rolling with it anyway, it needed to get to this place, previously they would have done it in one episode
