A week ago I twisted my ankle. I managed to keep walking on it. I had to drive seven hours or so the next day back to Scotland. By then it was swollen and I could barely walk on it. It wasn't dis coloured though.

A week on and it's still painful, I walk with a really bad limp. I have what feels like pins and needles in the ball of my foot and toes, a horrible nerve sensation on the outside of my ankle and up the outside of my leg through the calf and sometimes up to my bum.

It's my clutch foot, and I have difficulty depressing the pedal when driving.

I twisted it again yesterday and heard a cracking sound that hurt like hell, but I've managed to walk a bit more on it today.

Is it just a case of MTFU or should I go and see my GP? I don't think anything is broken but I'm spooked by the nerve pain.

Always worth getting advice, A&E though, not a GP. As long as you go at a quiet time, no harm in it Pete.

Times like this, I turn to a good private sports physio.

How do you know you haven't done ligament damage? Even a physio wouldn't be able to tell you.

Should have gone to A&E sooner. Still go though.

**** me he did it a week ago.

Off to your GP or a Walk in Centre.

Don't it's not an emergency if you did it a week ago.

If you've got a minor injuries unit go there. They deal with these sorts of injuries all day long. Waste of resources to go to A&E

If you're having trouble driving, can I have your Landrover?

GP would be a waste of time as they'd only send you to a&e for an x-ray anyway.
You've had an accident..... that's the 'Accident' in Accident AND Emergency.

Do not go to a physio. Go to minor injuries. Queen Margaret or the Victoria Hospital are probably your closest ones. QMH has minor injuries only. Neither were particularly busy earlier today...

And if by some dramatic turn of events your leg is actually broken and they need to keep you in and slice you open I'll see you tomorrow. 😀

They send you to a X-Ray for an X-ray, hence the X-Ray in X-Ray.

They don't call them A&E anymore, they call them Emergency Centres because they're meant for Emergencies not something you did a week ago.

I dunno Drac, we still have an A&E. And it would be the one that he'll probably be heading to.

Decision made I'm off to the limp in centre at the Vic.

Do you still have swelling?
Even a week later I'd still be in the camp of rest, rest, rest if there is still swelling.

Maybe after a fortnight once the swelling has gone I'dd start a bit of walking to start strengthening it up again.

I sprained my ankle for the second time a couple of months ago and it took over a month till I felt it was approaching anything close to being back to normal.

Where would potential broken bones fall into that graphic up there?

McMoonter - good decision. Hopefully I wont see you on my ward tomorrow.

According to my local hospital web site:

If you're injured or seriously ill you should go, or be taken to A&E.
The Countess of Chester Hospital's Emergecncy Department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to treat serious and life-threatening emergencies. This includes severe breathing difficulties, suspected broken bones and heavy blood loss

Given that MM ankle is crunching I'd say it's the choice for him.

Depends which bones but even then after week why do want to be seen immediately?

I could give details of why you're likely to be wrong but I'm not allowed to. 😀

Interesting view.
However, every fifth Wednesday of the month, and on the 31st of February, I employ something called 'clinical acumen' - this, coupled with the ability to touch, move, examine, and listen to patients, often negates the need for me to perform unnecessary and radiating tests on my patients if it's not wholly indicated. (google "Ottawa ankle rules" etc etc)
Some would say, that's why primary care is such a cost effective form of medicine....

Your GP MIGHT end up sending you off for an XR or further test. But they might not. Who knows....

You're wasting your time DrP, GP Surgeries don't have accident in the name so they're not for accidents.

In all fairness, I get paid £50 for every broken ankle I diagnose, so even if it 'looks a bit sprained' I'll give it a twist and a wrench just to be sure I get the big bucks... 😉

Regardless of where you go - sprained/busted/broked ankles are a real pain, and I wish you well Mc M...

I sprained an ankle 5 years ago, put ice on it straight away and then had a few sessions of physiotherapy. I was advised that there was no point in going to A&E because I could bear a little weight on it and it was obviously not broken. Took 6 weeks before I could run on it though.

I just asked the advice of an Orthopaedic Surgeon, they say go to A&E, or at least to a centre with X-Ray facility, and some one capable of reading the X-Ray

I turned up at a minor injuries unit with a broken wrist. They X-rayed, but didnt think it was broken. Only when I went to a proper hospital did they realise it was broken.

(that's a hint) but the Minor Injuries was in Scotlandshire

I went to A&E a week after I broke a finger. I'd just assumed it was sprained so taped it up, but after a week it was still bent and I couldn't move it, so popped in for an x-ray.

Can you put your foot in a scanner and email it to me?
Or failing that, chop it off and post it?

I get paid £110 for each consultation I perform 'remotely'...

'Proper' hospitals sometimes miss wrists, they usually do a review on wrists because they harder to spot fractures.

or proper hospitals decide that you have a broken wrist, decide to leave you in a back splint for 3 weeks, then decide they shouldn't have done that but decide without bothering to see the patient that despite the bone moving and restrictions in movement and nerve damage they'll let it heal and see what physio will do.....

never be the last one seen in a fracture clinic in Bury

and for wrists I recommend Salford there's a very good surgeon who £10k from my insurers trying to fix my wrist

the A&E care was however very good, just sheer randomness in the quality you get at the next stage

No webbing, so definitely not from Norfolk.

Other than that I'd try amputation.....

Defiantly go and see somebody about it. I broke my able 2.5 years ago and went to my local A&E after a week (my local is A&E and they have a minor and major departments) they didn't scan it because I could walk, they sent me away with pain killers.

5 months later I found out that it had been broken and I needed an op to put it right. That worked for a bit but I have just had a second and much more serious op.

If the hospital had x-rayed it when I first went in it would have probably been fine after 5 weeks. Be insistent on a scan.

Interesting view.

Yeah sorry DrP.
I have a skewed view of GPs after mine insisted for 12 months that the pain I was experiencing was gastric reflux. Seems he was rather wide of the mark when I finally took myself into A&E and ended up on a ward for 10 days with pancreatitis caused by gall stones.
There have been other GP related incidents within the family that has led to a level of mistrust.

And a large proportion of my family and friends work within the NHS.

I'm sure you're better than that.

second story

a lump started growing under an old scar on my head, went to see the GP, they were interested, (the one I saw got two others to have a look ) and they all recommended a head xray, off I go to the hospital, queue then get told tht they "don't x-ray lumps on your head"

back to GP, GP goes well lets leave it a few more weeks, I go sod that and say give me a referral letter and I'll go private

go see plastic surgeon, first thing he does is get my head x-rayed......

I fell a over t on wet decking a month ago and knackered my left ankle, thought a few beers might help and see how it was in the morning, even more painful and swollen, trip to A & E, x-ray, no breaks but diagnosed detached ligaments on both sides. Bloody painful, a week with a weird boot thing, crutches and painkillers. Can hobble about now and drive but still ankle swells up if up too long. I thought A & E were pretty good, told me it'll take at least 6 weeks, so not long now I hope. Get well soon

Update

I nipped down to A&E, there was only myself and a young girl with a limp there, so we were both seen really quickly.

They X rayed my ankle and found it wasn't broken, but it had been in the past. 😯

They explained that the inflammation was putting pressure on the nerve, and until the former reduced the latter would persist. So as painful as it is, there is no skeletal or ligament damage which is a relief. I will just keep taking anti inflammatories and wear some stout supportive boots until it recovers.

Thanks for all the advice folks. High five the NHS for their efficient service.
