Old Jamacan ginger beer, a good squeeze of lime, a wedge of a lime and ice. Perfect 🙂

Sounds good-will try the ginger beer & ice if I get offered another!
Cider sounds bizarre but may try it too.

It works well with ginger ale, I thought. Something lighter than ginger beer, like Canada Dry or something.

TBH though, it always struck me as a bit pointless paying a premium for a 'good' spirit and then mixing it with something heavily flavoured. I'm quite partial to bourbon and coke for instance, but I'll buy supermarket own-brand cooking bourbon for mixing and keep the good stuff to drink neat or with ice.

I use it to flambé my caramelised bananas. Very nice with a wee dod of good vanilla ice cream.

I can see your thinking and I tried this with the more bland ginger ales...and it was a waste of nice rum.

But yes I agree if you want to enjoy the spirit itself then drink it neat but if it's more of a combination drink you want then don't sacrifice any aspect. I save my nice Tequila for having straight up. I can't drink most spirits neat (got tricked into downing a pint of whisky once which really messed me up) so I prefer to make up a nice drink. Only exception is Tequila which I can happily knock back or sip neat all day long but that was after a trip to Mexico 🙂

Sure. It's always worth trying.

What works for me might not work for you. Tastes differ. Tequila's one of the few spirits I really struggle to deal with neat; I have to be in the right frame of mind and constitution, or it'll come straight back up again. I only ever really use it as an ingredient, say when making margaritas. That said, I've never tried any of the high-end ones, which I guess bear as much resemblance to Cuervo as an 18yo single malt does to Bells.

The other thing I can't cope with is Malibu. Nasty, nasty stuff.
