US article but applicable to most developed countries including the UK where similar practises have long since become widespread. I've noticed for the most part people are replaced with pooled cheap labour, usually with significantly worse working conditions and/or pay. Oh and high churn rates.

Well paid middleman/CEO's with a small team of reasonably paid admin staff (parasites IMO) doing very nicely out of lowering everyone else's salary and aiding employers to dump onerous liabilities.

Any consequences on those it is imposed upon? Not those who's type of work and working patterns suit the gig economy. Acceptable new norm maybe?

Capitalism has been around for a while and is all I've ever known. But it certainly isn't static and neither are labour laws. There has definitely been an acceleration in these practices in the last 15 years with a lag/no will to provide any protections.
