Gutted doesn't come close. He was fine last night but this morning his breathing was laboured and he couldn't stand up. Long story short I rushed him in to the vets. He was still breathing when I took him out of the van at the vets door but when I got him in on the table about a minute later he had passed away. They reckon he had a massive heart failure which I'm shocked at as his heart was listened to very recently and we were told he had a strong slow pulse. I'm not blaming the vet just surprised this was the cause.

He was 12 and we rescued him when he was just under 1. He has been a brilliant dog, at times appeared to read my mind and helped me loads when my wife had cancer. He had a great life and I'm glad that he didn't suffer long. That said I do feel cheated and can't believe how quickly this has happened. I will confess to having tears running down my face as I write this but I'm sure thoughts will turn to happier times once the shock wears off. Rest in peace my faithful furry friend, enjoy chasing the bunnies and the lady greyhounds and I'll see you on the other side some time. Sorry if I have rambled but I feel better for venting.

I'm so sorry, it must be a huge shock. He looks a beaut!

I know it's easy for others to say but try and take comfort from the fact he didn't suffer.

Venting did help thanks. There is a good community here at stw. We have another dog who already knows something is up but she will help us through. I'm not looking forward to seeing the empty beanbag when I get home.

Sorry to hear about that Cupra. Having taken two dogs to the vets in the last two years I know how hard it can be.

That is one smart looking Lurcher. So sorry for you and yours. Plenty dogs out there need a home as good as you can provide!

He had a great life

You gave him that and he repaid you with faithful friendship, focus on that and on the fact that whilst you are left shocked at the speed things happened, it was undoubtedly the best for him.

My condolences - I know the big empty hole that a well loved pet leaves when they finally depart 🙁

so sorry for you mate, i know people laugh but we lost a cat last year that we had for 20 years and it was horrible. Take solace in the fact that you gave him the best life...if only we were so lucky. remember him fondly.

He looks ace. So sorry you've lost him 🙁

Cuddling my about-11 years-and-a-bit-rescue dog that bit closer to me here right now. Absolutely dreading the day his time will be up.

Condolences, I had to have my first dog put to sleep on 1st May this year-and I dont do remembering dates! Cried on and off for days. My poor old other dog was just as depressed and upset and it has taken a while for us all to adjust. It helps thinking of all the happy times we had but also still brings a lump to my throat. Hope you get used to the loss faster than I have. 😥

My sympathies, as you say, after the initial shock you'll (hopefully) just think of the good times.

I still miss the family dog we had growing up but remember her fondly.

cupra - don't feel cheated that he went fast. Better to go that way when the time comes than a long slow suffering.

You gave him a great life.

Dogs are ace, but they do break your heart a bit when they go.

He was such a handsome chap, and in time that's how you'll remember him.

Bon Courage

Cupra, it must be difficult for you - but I think it must be the best kind of end for him. You have my sympathy - he looks like a super dog and surely was a terrific friend to you. Most of us love having a companion like that- but saying goodbye is so tough... Take it easy, J
