Whole family is appled up, but I don't get it. Have been toying with netbook or ultra portable laptop, but saw that Sony announced tablet launch yesterday and my head has been turned.

Thoughts?

Not seen the tablet but my work laptop is one of their first Sony Vaio Ultra-portable laptops and it's still going strong 7 years on and no one has made anything close in terms of specs for the size / weight since.

It's like all the other Ipad copies. If you're going to spend that much, why wouldn't you get an Ipad?

It's Android rather than iOS, so more potentially more flexible.

Personally I don't really get tablets - I have an MBP and iPad and use the MBP 99.9% of the time. iPad is just used for checking mail in bed occasionally.

Interesting.

I took MrsG to have a look/play with a few different tablets vith a view to a purchase. She has no particular bias but she just didn't like the ipad. Her favourites were the eee thing and the new Samsung 10.1.

Who wants something that folds in the middle leaving an ugly black line through the middle of the screen? I wouldn't touch an Android device anyway because of the amount of malware aimed at Android, and I'm bu99ered if I'm gonna start using antiviral 'ware on a portable.
And who gives a toss about Flash anyway? HP's Touchpad's only selling point was that it could play Flash, and look how well that did.

The whole point of not going apple is for people who want to do more with their machine, personalise, new roms, etc. Not to be governed by a very restrictive os. This comes from an apple fan, but tablet of choice is definitely android. Most things Sony are as cool as apple I reckon after having both. 🙂

Thanks for feedback - seems to cover all points of the compass.

Issues are

why have a tablet - for quick start up and ease of use when surfing t'internet and for films, e-reader capability, etc

why not have an ipad - because I hate the way apple dictates the way you have to use the device

why not get over the apple thing - because the android ones are the same price and look just as good

will i get one - still not sure!

Jailbreak it then. No restrictions and loads more tweaks.

Who wants to invalidate their warranty on a £500 piece of kit and risk bricking it?

I'm having a hard time understanding what it is that people want to do with their tablet device that Apple prevents them from doing. Particularly given the huge disparity in the number of native apps available for the different OS's.

The one big thing for me is not being tied to iTunes and its poor support for codecs. I need folder support which will never happen either.

As an iPad owner, I find the clunky file handling much more of a hindrance than the lack of flash. I know it's possible to get round it by jail breaking it, but the reason I switched to Apple in the first place was to get away from the need to find workarounds for what should be straightforward tasks. The lack of drag and drop file management on the iPad is it's biggest weakness, and quite a significant one.

I use Dropbox on my iPad, and have no issues at all with file handling. It's not a replacement desktop, or laptop computer, and I don't expect it to behave as one.

This is the most likely ipad competitior in my opinion- Amazon have the pricing nous, and media supply infrastructure, to make this a big winner..
