Don't have a Play 1 in "stereo" mode but do have a play 1 and can only say that I'm very impressed.

Not much help really, but I can tell you that volume will not be an issue.

I'm a few weeks into Sonos1 ownership and its a great bit of kit. After having a plethora of bluetooth and Airplay speakers over the years this completely blows them away in terms of sound quality and ease of use (obviously comparing £ for £ products). No need to use anything as crude as an iPod dock - you can just play direct from your iPod/phone via the wireless network. You don't need a bridge anymore. Definitely worth it. I've just got one and have been using it for playing music in my new extension as i'm painting and it fills the space no problems, so two of them working in stereo would sound great.

hmmmmm - I'm looking at Sonos. Sorry for the slight thread hyjack, but I was wondering how much you need you buy-in to the whole Sonos "ecosystem", does that make sense?

Do I have to use their app to play music, or can I just play it through iTunes/spotify/iplayer/whatever and send it via bluetooth?

Also, has anyone used their playbar thing?

surprisingly the website has all the info
http://www.sonos.com/en-au/rock-solid-wireless
basically a speaker and off you go, no bluetooth it's done via your wifi so you will need an always on type device to store your music and off you go. Now the entry price is coming down I'm more tempted - plan to have an old phone available as a backup/party controller but thats about it.

yeah, thanks Mike. 😕

The website only refs playing from the Sonos app, but I was wondering if you could use it as a wireless speaker outside of that - or if you were restricted to having to route everything via the app. So if the app doesn't support something (iPlayer radio for example) you can't send it to the speaker? Or is there an option to "pass through" audio?

The website doesn't mention this, so I assume you are tied to the app?

Sonos is based on it own network. It's only recently been updated to use your own network.
Their app supports most streaming radio services. It also plays all your music on phone or pc.
We just got the playbar & it's ace. Saving up for a pair of 1's & a sub now.

Stream from your iTunes, Internet radio, and subscription services.
Computer or NAS
Sonos can access any music files that are stored on a computer or network-attached-storage (NAS) drive. If you have a music library managed through iTunes, WinAmp, Windows Media Player, Rhapsody or Music Match, Sonos can import your existing playlists. We support nearly every format, including: MP3, iTunes Plus, WMA, AAC (MPEG4), AAC+, Ogg Vorbis, Audible (format 4), Apple Lossless, Flac (lossless) music files, as well as uncompressed WAV and AIFF files.

Internet Radio
Sonos Radio powered by TuneIn presents an aggregated collection of the world’s radio stations. Over 50,000 channels from every corner of the earth. Plus live and on-demand radio shows from around the world - all streaming direct to Sonos players throughout your house for free. Not good enough? You can also manually add any Internet Radio station streaming MP3, AAC or WMA.

Line in
The PLAY:5, CONNECT, and CONNECT:AMP each have an analog line input. Anytime you have an external source, such as a TV or CD player, connected to one unit in our system, that external source can be played throughout the entire system. Specifically, it shows up as an option under the line-in category of the music menu, and can be selected for playback in any room with a Sonos player.

Subscription Services
Sonos works seamlessly with AUPEO!, Deezer, iHeartRadio, JUKE, Last.fm, MOG, Pandora®, Rdio®, Rhapsody®, SiriusXM™ Internet Radio, Slacker® Radio, Songl, Spotify®, Stitcher SmartRadio™, TuneIn, Wolfgang’s Vault®, WiMP, and downloads from any service offering DRM-free tracks. (Service availability varies by region.)

http://www.sonos.com/en-au/system Click on the where can my music come from in the common questions section. I'm in the waiting for funds to allow stage so not had a go for a while with one. There was a separate remote option but a phone/app makes sense for a lot of things
Also on that page
Listen to all the music you love, no matter where it lives – think iTunes, podcasts, radio stations, Spotify, Pandora, etc. With streaming music services, use your smartphone, tablet, or computer to control apps from the cloud.

^ except iPlayer radio 🙁

Just done some googling..... apparently the only way to get iPlayer radio out of your sonos speakers is to physically plug your device into it. It seems that you can search for specific shows which might appear on other streaming services - but you can't "browse" and then play (which is how we tend to listen).

That's a shame, a lack of "Archers support" will rule it out for Mrs Batfink 🙁

http://tunein.com/search/?query=bbc
Tune in Radio, part of Sonos, plays Radio 1, 4, 4LW, 4 extra and local stuff. So plenty of Archers support there.

you can also download the podcast and never miss another episode

I've got my system hooked up to an Airport Express box so I can AirPlay anything to the Sonos boxes from my ipad or iphone

I have Sonos in 9 zones around the house and it is brilliant. NAS with all music on in lossless format. Radio from tune in (listening to Radio4 now - go me) plus millions of other radio stations by genre if you want. Picked up a blues rock band called No Sinner from there and they are brilliant. Back to Sonos, it is a quality piece of kit and I can't fault it.

I'm in my 'office zone' and have the play1 on as I type. Good bit of kit, good quality sound and easy to use. I use the app so cant comment on the other questions but can only recommend.

My wife listens to the archers omnibus on Sonos, using tunein radio, search for show, and away you go....

The whole radio / iplayer thing is a hot topic on the Sonos forums.

Basically you can listen to just about any radio station live on the Sonos as long as the station is streamed on t'internet (including BBC).

BUT listening to any 'listen again' radio programme via iPlayer is tricky although there are a few ways to work around it. A few people a bit chewy about it because Sonos advertise 'iPlayer' support when quite frankly there isn't any.

I have two Play 1's and they're ace. They stay on all the time, I have the ap on my phone and ipad plus the alarm setting is pretty cool. Sound quality is very good, much better than the Bose thing I had before

If you use spotify, you need to add the service to the app which is easy enough but not massively clear. However once done (its a 5 minute job) you can then just play your spotify through it.

I bought the bridge and from memoery the '1' doesn't have the bridge built in. all the others do though (from memory). The bridge is only £35 though, so not the end of the world.

All Sonos players have the ability to create or join the Sonos wireless network, including the 1 - it has a network port. The port also works in reverse, so you could plug a computer in to the speaker to get on the network.

The bridge was only required if it wasn't convienient to plug a player in to the router. With the new software, no units need to be plugged in to the router, it works completely over WiFi. A bridge is still useful as a range extender if you have dead spots.

Love my Sonos, great for multi room and is addictive. For a stand alone speaker the 1 is very impressive. A pair would be great. If you need more quality there are other options. Somewhere like Richer Sounds would give a great demo.

Monkfish - how have you got your Sonos connected to your Airport Express? I've got an Airport Express, though its an older one, which comes up in the Airport device list, but my understanding is that you have to connect a 3.5mm jack to it to actually play the content?
