So I got a Sonos 1 last weekend and am impressed. Within a couple of mins of getting it out of its box I was up and running. But I linked it to my music library on my Mac, so I can't access when it's switched off. I have a NAS drive connected to my router which I use for backing up. I've made a copy of my iTunes folders onto the NAS but not sure how to connect to it. It just found my Mac automatically and prompted me to connect, but I'm not getting any prompting to connect to the NAS and no way to get the device to search my network for sources.

Any advice is appreciated. Cheers.

Has your nas got a "share" setup?

Assuming you're using a smartphone, download a free file browser and check it can find the music on the NAS. As petrieboy says, this'll be where the problem lies

The latest update to the controller has ballsed up access from our iPad and my wife's I phone. Could be along those lines too.

Suggest you upload your iTunes library to google music then you can play it on your sonos without needing to power on your computer or NAS

You need to know the network name of your NAS, the folder the music is in and set that folder up as a share. That's down to the NAS itself but if you can see if from a computer you should be set.

Then, from the Sonos controller:

Settings, Manage Music Library, Music Library Setup

Add New Share

Mine is in the following format:

//Nas/Multimedia/music

It'll index and then you can see the library. Hopefully!

Thanks all. I think I need to face upto the fact my NAS drive is pants. Though I can access it from a computer and use it as an external HDD, I can't actually access its base software and setup features. Its always been a bit twitchy from day 1. Just goes to show if you buy cheap, you buy twice!

I've been looking at various cloud storage servcies, but all my music is held at full resolution, ripped directly from CD's, and I don't want to rip it down to a lower res. I don't mind lower res music for portable devices, but for home based larger listening I want to maintain resolution. Lower res MP3 sounds crap in a large room with decent speakers - and despite its size the Sonos 1 is a cracker. I'm really impressed.

What rate is your music ripped at? Google music is 320 kbps and I think you'd struggle to hear the difference between that and a CD.

As above, short term, sync iTunes and Google Play and access that from the Sonos controller (or the app on Android) - integrates well and you have a backup. Quality is great.

Longer term, Qnap or Synology NAS drive as a robust solution for all your backups and file sharing.

Then another Play 1, a SUB, a Connect for your good hifi, maybe a Playbar for the TV and a Play 5 for the other room, couple more Play 1's.... 😉

I love my play1, looking to get some more. Started with spotify but the ability to subscribe (£9.99) and/or upload your own music (£0.00) to Google swung it for me. Integration of Google Music into the Sonos app is very deep, e.g. thumbs up, "radio", feeling lucky.

Most of my music is ripped to Apple Lossless from original CDs. I tend to find with MP3 at any bitrate I tend to find the quality suffers, must be due to the compression method. It sounds harsher in treble and the bass is not as full - not sure of the technical term, but even though the bass is as deep in terms of the frequency it doesn't seem to have the same punch. I've done a back to back comparison between CD and the same track ripped to 440Kps, so same bitrate as CD, and the MP3 was noticeably inferior. Not noticed the same deterioration with Apple Lossless even though the capacity of the tracks is reduced. Having said that i'd probably not notice it on the Play1.

I think Google Music is free so might give it a go for my phone and Sonos.

Don't turn the mac off?

Have got a Mac mini running as a headless unit, connected to a Nas - Feeds tunes and films to assorted locations and devices throughout the house. Never turned off.
