I'm trying to work out why some websites take ages and ages and ages to load, while others (almost all of them) load as expecting in the blink of an eye.

Fortunately I've now stumbled on two biking related sites that exhibit the problem, so I now feel OK to ask the STW IT Massive for inspiration.

CTC forums and mavic website seem to take 5 minutes of more to load. Is there anything I can do to work out what's happening?

For reference I'm on virgin media cable, and accessing the hub over WIFI with 1 PC and with a cable connection with a different PC. Both PC's have the same problem.

Any help/ideas appreciated.

Looking at the mavic site myself.... its not especially slow for me (not 5 mins anyway) but a chunk of the screen stays blank for a while as a slide show of images pre-loads. I suppose theres an order the files on the page load in so if large bits of the page are large or require a lot of images to load before they display then that can make that page appear slower than others. By contrast on this forum if you have a slow connection its the small details that are the last to appear - usually the buttons just above the field for typing a reply.

Hmm,

I've just loaded the ctc forum home page in 3s - and I'm in California.

Looking a the page there isn't a lot that I can see that is going to slow things down.

If you get really bored you can record your session with a tool like HTTPWatch and have a look what it does.

Reboot the router?

Is Virgin's DNS up the pole? You could try manually entering a public DNS server (eg, 8.8.8.8) into the TCP/IP settings on your network card, perhaps?

Try a different web browser?

If using Chrome you could try Ctrl-Shift-I, then the timeline tab, then hit record and load the mavic site. Might give a clue.

Loads ok here though 🙁

OK, I've reset the router. That didn't help.

I've also measured the DNS response, with namebench. Great tool, love it. It reports that my current primary server is the fastest. I've not had a chance to double check, but I also think it's telling me that the 2nd and 3rd ones are in the top fastest too. So no problems there.

Ah, interesting. Problem only seems to be affecting one PC. Not sure if its always been like that and I just imagined the problem on both.

Off to see the differences between the two...
