A guy I knew made a working miniture steam engine.
He was an engineer at Durham science labs & made stuff for students to use in projects. If something needed fixing he'd either fix it or make a new one.

OP, would be good to see a vid of that in action. Lashing the two blocks together with chain doesn't seem the most obvious approach! Can't help imagining the whole thing vibrating and squealing in action!

Some incredible mechanical and metal working techniques going on, the flow forming is truly the stuff of magic!! (About 45s in)

I can't decide which category these guys are in, mad or genius, but Lady Penelope's car it ain't.

But what's not to like about a 4 litre straight 12 on open exhausts? ๐Ÿ™‚
