Great game! I’d hate to be that poor kid who seems to have Silva and Sane constantly running at him, with De Bruyne joining in for a laugh

So if the offside decisions had been got right over the two legs, city would be 3 and Liverpool 2.

That one wasn't offside on 2 counts FFS! coming off Milners knee, and Chamberlain playing him onside.

Yeh, and if Sterling could finish you'd have beaten Utd by 6 on Sunday.

In another world you'd be down to 10 men for 4 separate bookable offences by Ederson on Sane.

What's your point? Humans make errors, control what you can not what you can't.

I'm looking at the score and it says 1-3, what's your point caller?

Law 5:

Decisions of the referee

Decisions will be made to the best of the referee`s ability according to the Laws of the Game and the spirit of the game and will be based on the opinion of the referee who has the discretion to take appropriate action within the framework of the Laws of the Game.

The decisions of the referee regarding facts connected with play, including whether or not a goal is scored and the result of the match, are final. The decisions of the referee, and all other match officials, must always be respected."

It’s pretty poor that in this day and age, such an important goal can be incorrectly ruled out!

I can easily see why the assumption would be that the city player played it, either whole or in part, but with the action triangulated between ref, assistant and goal line assistant that shouldn't be missed. Fact is though, it was, and that's where football needs a (functioning) VAR system

Yes as a neutral I thought city might get less of  beating from Madrid/Barca than Liverpool.

I can only listen to Steve McManaman commentating for so long before I want to hacksaw my own ears off and hurl them into another dimension

I’m now past that point by some degree

Oops! That was a bit of a howler!

Man of the match? Milner? How many blocks has he put in tonight?

Alexander-Arnold has put a hell of a shift in in the first half against Sane and Silva

Fair play, they've been clinical when they needed to be. Sadly, the blame will go to the officials when frankly some of the defending has been scandalous, he might as well have rolled a red carpet out for his path to goal.

I don't really remember either keeper having a difficult save to make, which for such an open attacking tie is a surprise. Mind, Milner's been like a one man wall, he'll be black and blue (and red all over) tomorrow

Imagine losing over 2 legs to a team that openly admit to shaving their chests in the team showers 😉

Wijnaldum is the man of the match for me, broken up so much of City’s play on the edge of the box where they can be so dangerous. Liverpool definitely the better team over the two legs, tactically smarter in both games.

Is that 9-9 aggregate score this season? Liverpool 3-1 wins?

I know tonight went in Liverpools favour for the Sane goal, but I really hope VAR never comes in. It will take away the whole excitement and experience, whether good or bad, it's part of the game and has been for 130+ years.

Great result. Night night.

Spoken like a man who’s team has just been on the benevolent side of not one, not two, but three wrong offside decisions over two legs 😂

I’m sure If you were Pep you’d be expressing much the same sentiments, yes? 😉

I tend to agree, not least because it means the game moves on without pauses....... I wonder though if a system like cricket might work, where each team has an appeal per half to use, so at least a glaring error is overturned, and then also means that teams appealing every decision might reduce - 'if you're so sure then use your review!'

Over the course of a season all teams get good decisions and bad. Using VAR it could be argued the city goal may have been ruled out, who knows.

That's the great thing about football.

Proper VAR needs to exist, too much in this and these decisions need to be right. Get VAR done properly and done in pace with the game. If the ball is in the net then 1min to review isn't going to matter.

However City did run out of steam if you let 5 goals in you shouldn't expect to go through

Well with those two legs and the United game in the middle, it’s been one bonkers week of football for City to round off their season

Great to watch though. Three blinding games on the bounce

Why? It hasn't been needed in over 100 years, why now? I know I'm banging a drum to an extent but the games I've seen with it, have been a farce.

I think some Germans from 1966 would disagree, Maradona would have been sent off for the hand of God and plenty more, what you mean is it's not been there for the last 100 years.

They would have had 60 on target but they hit James Milner 57 times

The simple fact is that disallowed goal wouldn't have been enough to put City through: They would have needed to score another 2, without conceding. Yes, it may have changed the course of the game but, then again, maybe it would have inspired Liverpool into action. Who knows?

In the end, you can't concede 5 goals in the CL and expect to go through. Yes, it does happen, but it's unlikely.

The current VAR test doesn't work for me, slows the game too much and leaving the crowd in the dark whilst the ref trots off to the halfway tunnel to look at an iPad for what feels like an age isn't the right option. I'm not a Luddite and appreciate all sports have to move with the times, but taking the fast flow of football away isn't worth the return of being able to say "Yes yes all the decisions in this game were 100% right" Quite frankly I think that would be a bit boring.

I've never understood why the behind the goal assistant don't seem more effective?

RM.

neither was goaline technology or cameras at rugby or cricket . Technology has advanced and most people are aware whether a decision was right or wrong because we then see it in slow mo from many angles unlike when the only way to see it was to be there and get one chance.

In genera i like it but it has to have the  refs call like cricket  has if its not clear one way or the other.

i could live without decisions being 100% right, which is particularly hard when much is 'in the opinion of' etc., as long as clear howlers get corrected.
