Never mind commenting, imagine reading the Daily Mail and admitting to it.

As a bit of trivia - A panther isn't a separate species of animal. Panthers are leopards with a specific gene mutation that makes them all black although in certain light you can stlll see the leopards spots.

I'm sure thats in now way relevant to this thread though

I thought a leopard never changes its spots?

Cougar?

He's mostly correct.  "Panther" is a generic catch-all name.  Leopards and cougars are both panthers, but a leopard and a cougar are different animals.

Black panthers - usually implied when we say "panther" - is a leopard. It could also be a jaguar, but can't be a cougar because they lack the genetic traits which causes a melanin surfeit.  And yes, they do indeed have black spots on a black background.

The cougar, the puma, the mountain lion (and to aid confusion, also the Florida Panther), they're all different names for the same thing.

Typing "cougar" with a small C is really hard. 😁

"Panther" is a generic catch-all name

From the Latin innit, and Panthera is the Genus for the big cats

Panthera Onca - Jaguar (although I'm sure I was taught it was Panthera Panthera)

Panthera Pardus - Leopard

Panthera Leo - Lion

Panthera Tigris - Tiger

Panthera Uncia - Snow leopard

A freebie extra; domestic cats are either black or orange, Those are the only colour pigments they have genes for, carried on the X chromosome, everything else is just a variation, including white

I'm sure the venn diagram would show strong correlation of Pistonheads members and Daily Mail readers.

I dunno about that there have been threads on piston head which started as anti bikes by the OP and descend into the OP getting ripped a new one.

Panthera Ferrous

Tends to have long white fur, black and leathery underneath. Other distinctive characteristics include it's loud mating call and hypothesized but unobserved wild mating habits.

Feels like we need another venn diagram with single track readership and the Panthera Ferrous. I suspect a lot of overlap.

It is touching that the OP thinks that only one STW member is a D.M. commenter.

I think Buxton the Blue Cat, the greatest villain in cinematic history, would beg to differ
