I think in the name of balance and equality we should all get together and burn the Quran, the bible and those leaflets the Jehovah's witnesses insist on giving you while your trying to get them off your doorstep.

They're all equally as valid. We could have some sparklers too

That's just beyond stupid. It's ignorant and intollerant on a grand scale.

As for the suggestion of 'equality' mentioned above...better idea, lets all forgo the public bonfires and just accept we're all different and do things differently and do our best just to get along...

The worse thing anyone can do is give the nutjob the oxygen of publicity. Which, unfortunately, is what he has been given.

Er... I think it's meant to be provocative...

It's some hick religeous nutter who's out to make a name for himself. Seems to be doing a pretty good job of it so far.

I think most most religious 'leaders' were bullied or lonely as kids and turned to an imaginary friend for help. Later in life it gives them a slight bit of power over weak-minded brethren and they usually end up abusing it.
Personally I'd ban the practice of any religion, after a couple of generations of cullings in order to stamp it out the world would be a much better place...

It is designed to be provocative. It's also completely legal, as it should be. What is sad is that if something nasty pops off in Kabul, the likely net result will be Afghans being killed by Afghans over the actions of some superstitious American bellend and their superstitious reaction to it.

The worse thing anyone can do is give the nutjob the oxygen of publicity.

I'm not that keen on him having the oxygen of oxygen...

Back to the OP. The man is clearly an arse. The preacher that is, not binners.

That's just typical of your insensitivity and hate towards my people. US LUSites have venerated the Lucky Unlit Sparkler for many thousands of years, ever since the first Sparkler was handed down to use on Mount Coed y Brenin, and you just want to burn them to antagonise us? Shame. Shame on you, Binners.

At the risk of sounding like I'm supporting the guy (he's a fruitcake) it's the sort of thing the opposition have been doing for a long time.

And what we tacitly accept by allowing free speech.

Burning flags, effigies, religious icons etc is an intrinsic part of the Islamic culture. As too, it would seem, is throwing ones shoes in protest.

When Christian westerners mimic this behaviour, it looks decidedly odd. But I'd fight to the death to defend my right to fling shoes, burn books, or whatever else might tickle my fancy if I too were to go a bit mental.

You never fail to disappoint shib defending the right of the mental to do mental things excellent idea. I wont rise to your troll but nicely done

Dove World Outreach Center

They really are reaching out aren't they.
What utterly terrible Christianity

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also...Jesus
Do unto others what you want them to do to you- Jesus Sermon on the mount
"Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you-Jesus Sermon on the mount

As the koran also includes the Old Testament..the word of god - which they believe in but are ignoring [ the eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth is in the OT but was revoked by Jesus in the New] they are burning their own book/reasoning as well.
Idiotic beyond words on so many levels.

it's the sort of thing the opposition have been doing for a long time.

Well done for buying the right wing ideology that Islam is the opposition. Without this belief [ well communism has gone and we had nothing to fear for a bit] in the masses how would they keep the arms movement and imperalism alive? I belive that the main bogey man was a CIA operative for anumber of years and comes from our ally Saudi Arabia...you could not make this up eh. Yes lets all get scared about Islam rather than American expansionist/explotative foreign policy

Clearly he is following the Christian teachings of "turning the other cheek", "forgiveness", and... "what, you f%%king want some? C'mon then if you think you're hard enough. Crusades ya bas"

...and we'd have some brilliant buildings for climbing centres and Lazerquest.

Yeah but think of all the new Wetherspoons there would be.. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

[pedant]
They were saying on the radio last night that while it might be legal to burn books, it's against a Florida State ordinance to have a bonfire on open ground...

So, technically what they are doing would be illegal...

strikes me that a lot or religous groups have no concept of how provocative they are being, they seam caught in there own hazy world and dont see the bigger picture of causing dispruption and hatred around the world,
there must be a law to stop this? as there is over here, but then again thats the usa for you!!

Nope, I was defending OUR right to express ourselves. I don't see myself chucking my shoes or burning books, however I value my right to do so should the whim take me, or indeed, if I go mental and decide it's a perfectly normal thing to do.

Doubt it is, the 1st Amendment of the Constitution trumps a local by-law.

Next time you defend OUR right you may want to actually say ours rather than my and it will help prevent the confusion caused by you using a different word from the one you mean, an error you repeat in your reply ๐Ÿ™„

however I value my right to do so should the whim take me, or indeed, if I go mental and decide it's a perfectly normal thing to do.

How is anyone meant to think this means ours?

Like the Muslims who want to build mosque overlooking Ground Zero in New York!!

You'll find, if you dig deeper, that the Floridan Evangelists are responding to Muslim insensitivity.

Tolerance and the Koran are pretty incompatible.

Religion - yawn!

Doesn't the constitution protect the right to follow a religion and to express that faith - or does that only apply to Christian religion?

Funny how many right-wing American commentators that usually bang on about constitutional rights have been so quick to dismiss them over this issue.

Because MY right, is also YOUR right, and the right of everyone else. Because whilst I feel that I probably should, I don't actually have any further rights over and above silly little thick people like you for example.

I thought it was a mosque or at least contained a mosque (or area for prayer) but was, as stated, some way from 'ground zero' and also on the site of an existing facility.

Personally I think building a mosque on or adjacent to 'ground zero' would be a victory for tolerance. I'd like to think it would disarm 'radical' Islam and go some way to promoting peace and understanding.

I doubt burning the Koran is aimed at promoting peace and understanding.

Religion has always puzzled me.

The way different people choose to interpret it in ways that quite clearly suits their own agendas, claim it is the one true way and then use that to justify all manner of blatently cruel and malevolent activities AND THEN how some use the principles freedom of choice and speech to support their right to do so and shrug and turn a blind eye/bury their heads in the sand.

What a load of arse.

i've just checked, and apparently Pastor Terry Jones has asked his boss, who replied, telling him to carry on.

so that's all right then.

That Daily Show / Islamaphobia for Dummies link does a great job of tearing down the arguments on the "Ground Zero Mosque". Gotta love Jon Stewart: sometimes seems from the UK that the only objective and sane US news comes via a "comedy" show.

Thanks Lifer.
