Gearbox linkage bushing has gone according to the nice man from the RAC. So I get to wait for however long the recovery wagon is going to take, in a Swindon housing estate 🙁

pretend you need the toilet, go to a house, i'm sure they'd accommodate that, then all of a sudden they are offering you cups of tea and digestives....

or,...they could be weird....lock you in the garage and feed you on porridge and water for twenty years?

I had a gearbox linkage fail at 1am on my first car - A 1980 v-reg Maxi.
Luckily it failed as I put it into 4th gear and as I pulled the stick back the linkage went forward underneath the car and I was left in gear, but with a floppy lever (fnaar fnaar)
I drove home, parked up and had a look the next day. Stuck a split pin though it and carried on as normal, but I always kept a spare in the glovebox just in case....

😀

I'm now in the cab of the recovery truck, end route to the garage. This is turning out to be an expensive month...

I can assure you that exactly the same thing can happen in a sprinter. The only difference is you can fix it with a zip tie.
