Thanks for all the people who helped my choose an iPhone.

I have bought a refurbished iPhone 12 from Apple. It arrived Tuesday and so far so good. Far less problems than I expected changing over. It’s also now clear that that my Samsung has 3 long term software faults

Positives so far. The keyboard is way better than expected. Loving double tap the keyboard for a full stop, loving swipe, loving hold the space bar to move the cursor. I can get still use Snapseed, OS maps, and all the social media stuff. It talks to my sound bar and I can even screen cast to my chrome cast.

Negatives, well I’ll miss Back Country Navigator and my weather App.

So any other tips I should know?

What are you using for offline mapping? I hear map.me is good

What are you using for weather? So far I’ve got the met office and the bbc. Both free but neither tells me how much rain is expected. Anything free or cheap that does that

How do I see and move between open Apps. Some times I see then when I swipe up but not often

Any other App recommendations for some one that likes the outdoors and photography

Not that it really matters any more but your Samsung would have done all those things. Things like two spaces => full stop and swiping have been features of Android keyboards (Swype and Swiftkey amongst others) way longer than Apple's.

Swipe up with a Z type shape from the bottom of your screen to bring up all open apps

I find iphone work best when you go all in and fully embrace icloud. Use it for contacts, photos, backups, calendars.... The more you use it, the better it all works

I had a swype keyboard on Android. However for whatever reason I found emoji’s hard from that so I was always swapping keyboards. I think just expected the iOS key board to be worse and I’m relieved that it brings all the best bits together

I’m not doing iCloud yet. Contacts came across from android just fine. Photos are synching to one drive. But I’ll review whether I should be at some point

I used to use "HERE we go" for offline mapping and been happy with with it. Not played around with many Nav apps so I am far from being knowledgable in this area.

Accuweather

A quick swipe from bottom edge to middle of the screen will take you out of whatever app you are using and take you to the home screen.

A swipe from the bottom edge and hold in middle of the screen will show you which apps are open at the moment and you can browse through them and switch beetween them. A double tap on the back of the phone will also bring up the list of open apps.

I find the "Tips" app from Apple pretty good at learning how to use the features and they update it every time a new SW release is made so you understand how to use the new features.

yr.no for weather as they are astoundingly accurate.

Camera Boost to allow more control of exposure settings.

Swipe up from the bar at the bottom and hold to switch apps. Only need to go up a cm or so rather than to the middle.

Drag down from top right to get the control Centre

Carrot and Dark sky are good weather apps.

Spectre and Halide are great camera apps

1password is brilliant

You can add a webpage to your Home Screen if you want a Singletrack forum “app”

If you have a Mac or other i devices you can copy and paste between them and it feels like magic every time.

Don’t get sucked into discussions with Apple haters

Apple’s own weather app is pretty good now, it incorporates much of what was in Dark Sky when they bought it like predicted rainfall amounts, dynamic maps etc. Accuracy seems to be similar to Met Office and BBC.

just so you know the apostrophe on the apple keyboard is actually a left single quotation mark, this may or may not cause you grief in the future

Your iPhone will do the same as your Samsung. Only a little slower.

One thing it lacks is ‘close all apps’

Why would it need that?

Another +1 for Yr.No for weather. (Not Apple exclusive, obvious.) I’m astounded how accurate it is and seems to be more so than our own Met Office.

Having been using iPhones ever since the 3G, I can honestly say that I have never, ever felt the need for a function that does that. Perhaps you could enlighten me as to why it’s such a necessary function.

Your iPhone will do the same as your Samsung. Only a little slower.

Citation needed, because I don’t believe it for a second, especially with the new silicone that they’re built around, and which is also being used to great effect in desktop and laptop computers.

My most used apps are WeatherProHD, Shazam, Books, TomTom Go, Dark Skies, along with Brave, Firefox, DuckDuckGo and Ghostery Dawn, as well as Safari, and the default search in all of those browsers is DuckDuckGo.

I’ve also got a couple of VPN’s installed, 1.1.1.1 and Mozilla VPN.

It’s worth pointing out that iOS 15 has a function you can switch on called Private Relay, that acts a bit like a VPN, and obfuscates your searches, and also Hide My Email, which allows you to create burner email addresses, so you can create a new email address and assign it to a new website that you sign up to, this then allows you to disable that address if you find that it’s being used to spam you. You can create as many as you want, and bin them immediately if it’s just a once-off sign-up, or just keep using them.

Tip - don’t try to use it to view this forum as it won’t work, and STW don’t want to appear to solve it

It’s not needed thanks to Keychain.

You can set shortcuts to taps on the back of your phone.

just so you know the apostrophe on the apple keyboard is actually a left single quotation

It’s on the bottom right when you bring up the numerical keyboard.

Dark Sky weather app has been mentioned, but seeing as how it sent Android users apoplectic with rage that Apple bought it and took it away from them it’s probably worth checking out.

... erm, I got a 13 mini too this week.

+1 on no close all apps function.

Loving double tap the keyboard for a full stop, loving swipe, loving hold the space bar to move the cursor.

Had no idea about any of this!

I'm not liking the inability to delete emails direct from notifications (happy to be corrected) and when i'm casting a TV app i have to unlock the phone and go to the app to pause for a wee! (happy to be corrected)

Ok, just figured that one out - hold down the notification then select bin (it was swipe on my S7)

It used to be needed on Android I think as they would run out of memory & flatten the battery. But even on Android it’s not been needed for years I don’t think.

If it matters to anyone the iPhone is a bit more secure than samsung but for most people it makes no difference.

To swap between apps just swipe left/right at the bottom of the screen.

Or as others say up to middle and hold a second to view all.

And works for me iPhone13/iOS 15.2.1 using Safari. Though I see both stingmered and I are full members - maybe something about the ads?

Mapping - I've been very happy with OutdoorsGPS and whatever their annual OS maps subscription is. Downloaded a 1:25k and 1:50k for the areas I explore most.

I'm moving from a pixel to an iphone 12 and not enjoying it at all so far but perhaps I'll get used to it. Main advantage so far is the iphone is so heavy I don't need to check my pocket to see if I remembered it as the gravitational pull is hard to miss.

Add to this Hide My Email. Generates a duff anonymous email for signing up to stuff, which can be deleted as soon as it has served its purpose
