I wonder what percentage of the climate denial comments I see on FB are bots

there are people who I unfortunately know in real life (so verified humans) who online just blindly parrot the daily talking point as if it were their own individual free thought.

so I think it is hard to tell.

Or external blinds of all types.

True, but visibility is somewhat limited… 😎

Just checking the temperature, I’ve got the windows open and there’s a bit of a breeze, but it’s showing 24°, with 74% humidity!

I might put some washing out tomorrow, it’ll be dry in a couple of minutes!

We are on a motorbike tour in Europe, me and my wife on pillion. Bad timing. Yesterday we did a motorway slog from St. Omer near Calais to a small village near(ish) to Dijon.

Helmet, gloves and protective riding gear in this heat is absolutely brutal. Like riding in an oven. We had an early start but by midday until we arrived temperatures stayed between 39-41°C. I had planned to arrive around 2pm but it was actually 6 because we stopped so often to get out of the sun.

We survived by drinking gallons of cold water (frozen the night before), laced with rehydration tablets. At every other aire we poured cold water over ourselves and rode until it evaporated, then repeat.  Today is a much shorter ride to Chamonix which will be a little cooler. Next year we are going to Norway!

I went to a gig last night (Lemonsuckr at a new to me venue, Alphabet in Brighton - both great)

I've been as sweaty at a gig before, but that was from being fully in the mosh pit, the venue had some sort of ventilation system going but I was drenched just from standing out at the edge. Still, at least you have that blissful moment to look forward to, when you step out of the venue, with the final chord of the last and best song still ringing in your ears, and the cool of the night air hits you.

Or not....for all the sweatiness and moshing, it was still hotter outside than in! We had to stop at a Tesco for a couple of bits on the way home and could have stayed all night.

If your in Spain(may be in other countries)don’t forget you can grab a cold Aquarius from the petrol stations or supermarkets, it’s like ready made squash in various flavours  but is isotonic with all the stuff so you don’t need to use the hydration tablets.

It’s very popular and you can get big twin packs to freeze like you’re doing with the water reasonably.

The weather in France and Bilbao is currently brutal and hotter than my desert bits ATM.

Spare a thought for pregnant women. Mrs Reeksy went into labour on a 40 degree day at home and I remember chasing her round the house with ice packs and a pedestal fan as she tried to get comfortable before we finally went to the hospital and labour stalled for hours.

My wife had similar, was about 35 though. She was induced and I remember sleeping on the floor of the hospital ward as it was the only place cool enough.  I am so glad I don't need to go back to those days

Middle son was born on a previously highest UK temp of 37.1C in August 1990, we took fans & ice packs into the labour ward - his middle name references the time.

I keep hearing that people are climbing into their vehicles and sitting there not moving but with air con on. Shirley this is adding to Pollution, also according to the mechanic chap on the Beeb, bad for your vehicle.

I was in a hired room above a pub last night, making bug hotels for the WI, it was so hot that I only lasted an hour, we’re not even in the ‘hot heat’ area. Messing about with sheep’s wool, dusty  straw, twigs and pine cones, didn’t help. We were all coughing.

Yesterday early evening I had to drive over to a village hall in the next village over to collect an offspring. Got there about 20 minutes early, went to get a cold drink and sit in the shade. Noticed at least two other parents sat in their cars with their engines idling, presumably so they could run the air con.

Went out for a road bike ride last night at 6.30pm and it felt surprisingly OK and by 9pm it was really pretty pleasant. I'm in Manchester though so I suspect its not quite as offensively hot as some other places further south at the moment but it was about 33degrees when I set off. Agreed with my mates that we would not attack each other and try and take it easy which (mostly) held-up throughout the ride.

Still, I drank about 3 pints of cordial when I got back at 10pmish which suggests I may have been more dehydrated than I really felt I was.

British National TT Championships today in west Wales, it is baking hot already.

Riders in ice vests, the UCI Extreme Weather protocol has been invoked which allows riders access to extra water (normally TTs are free from feed zones, no bottle hand ups from cars etc but they've allocated a couple of feed zones).

Forecast to be 32°C by this afternoon.

The weather for the road race is looking a lot more reasonable, back to about 20-23°C.

I looked up how hot it was in Midlothian/Edinburgh in 2022 and was surprised to see it was only(!) 30°c.

It was 42degrees on my doorstep in peebles that day.

Aren't official MET office/Meterological recorded temperatures measured 10m from the ground in still air and shaded?

Either that or it was 53 degrees a couple of years ago on my deck. Despite the official temp being 30.

It's been 40+ on the deck this year more than once already. And will probably hit 45 today, might get 50 at the weekend (official temp will be 31 i think).

Yeah, my younger brother was born on the hottest day of 1976 (35 degrees where they were i think) in an airconditioning free labour ward in the southwest. His name has nothing to do with the heat.

You picked the wrong week to go away 😀 It was glorious going through the Lairig Ghru and back along the Cairn Toul ridge yesterday. A bit sweaty climbing up past the Corrour bothy but 14C, sunny and enough wind to keep the insects at bay once you got up top.

Interesting how all pervasive the anti energy transition propaganda is.

I have a relative who is an intelligent person, consumes no right wing media, who seems fixated on the idea of how essential flywheels are in the energy grid to maintain 50 Hz and that the energy transition isn't possible because of this. I'm not an electrical engineer, but AFAIK this is a totally solvable engineering hurdle and not really worth me spending any time thinking about. The point being why is the general public even concerning itself with things like this, you didn't spend any time worrying about the many scientific and engineering challenges that needed to be overcome in order to extract oil from deep sea oil wells.

My dad challenged me on a conversation he had with some bloke at the bus stop saying you couldn't sit in an EV for longer than 30mins due to the electromagnetic field posing a risk. I just laughed, thinking he was telling me an anecdote about a tin foil hat crackpot. But no, he actually wanted me to properly address this concern.

Denying the climate emergency is much less scary than taking it on board. Individuals can't do much to solve it and the powerlessness is frightening

I think it is (or maybe was) more like 2m from the ground in a thing called a Stevenson Screen But in principle you're bang on.

It's not all "denialism" now though, there's a large number of "the world is burning... but... growth" apologists for ramping up fossil fuel use (all ignoring the growth potential of the switch to renewables of course). Many with nothing to gain from it themselves. Although I'd imagine everyone attending that conference will be looking at it from the personal financial gain angle.

yes we need to stop using oil/coal/wood but to ban production of it in the UK, and then import it is just plain barmy. Either stop using it or get it from a UK source.

I cant work out if air con units are good or bad either if we install solar to run them. The irony at the moment that people are buying fans/air con units further adding to the issue.

It's pretty obvious hooman beans as a species are doomed. Best spend the little time we have left before the apocalypse doing the things we enjoy doing with the people we like. Screw the rest.

Yeah sorry, it's a bit like that today. All the talk of squabbling on Facebook and what goes in which bin to save the World. It seems a bit trivial in the grand scheme of things - like a flea trying to shag an elephant...

He's not wrong about the first bit, loss of frequency control was the reason for that massive Spain/Portugal outage last year.

However the solution is - just ****ing massive, (in the literal sense of the word) flywheels connected to an electric motor. They don't have to generate electricity, just the inertia. There's a few already in the UK, the correct term is Synchronous Compensation.

They're stupidly cheap on lease deals. My workplace has two car schemes (one sort of came bundled with a much wider string of perks, one is separate) and those Chinese EVs are all over them. £300/month all in, straight out of your salary, no thought required.

I'm driving another Chinese EV (actually hybrid) thing on an event at the moment. Bloody massive hulk of a car, tiny on the inside but lots of gadgets, good spec list and you can see why people go for them.

All the windows in the flat we rent here in the Pyrenees face east - so in summer these outside blinds are lifesavers. Come lunchtime we half open them but keep the windows themselves closed - to prevent the hot air from coming in. Keeps the flat comfortable all day..... having said that, I am sitting here in just my underpants 🙂

At night the blinds go up and the windows are flung open - but only until the heat of summer where the night time temp fails to drop below the mid 30's!

I'm in London today.

6am train with no Aircon was brutal - dude stood next to me was ~dripping~ sweat and left a pool. I suspect was not much better but was sat down so you couldn't see it.

Now I'm here, I don't think it's as hot as yesterday in Eastleigh. I did some outdoor work* at 2pm and it was brutally hot and slightly humid.

I've managed to surf from one air conditioned office to a cafe, about to move onto an air conditioned event space though and only walking 10-15mons.

Thing is without overarching strategic decisions being make in a sensible way by goverment/s individual lifestyle changes while laudable will make the square root of sod all difference.

you can't even reliably take a bike on the train for god sake.

Probably but a real temp trumps a theoretical temp taken at head height in full sun to establish how ****ing hot it was 🤣

Normal measurement of temp is 2m above the ground and taken in the shade afaik.

Either way it is hot

Introduces inefficiencies but you're just shunting heat from place to place with them and if the energy to do so is 100% derived from the sun then probably a bit of a non-event.

(ignoring manufacturing + disposal, obvs)

running aircon from a coal fired station is about 1000% bad of course
