Can you help me identify what is causing my bathroom sink (downstairs) to have a drain smell that happens when the tap is run initially but isn’t there generally (no odour detected sniffing the drain or over flow after hand washing)
possibly relevant stuff-
- it’s got a bottle trap
- the over flow and it’s path to the waste is moulded in the ceramic
- there’s a pop up waste (this might be a culprit but it doesn’t smell all the time)
- I cleaned the bottle trap and put some bleach in but no joy. There was what in hindsight might have been a chunk of ceramic in the trap (it was black but on reflection that was probably because it had sat in the bottom of the trap for a while) which maybe came from the sink innards, it’s not obviously leaking though and it was only a sliver about 2cm by 1cm in size.
Is it possible the water is getting sucked out of the trap?
Perhaps caused by another nearby connection such as a washing machine or toilet?
Sounds possibly like the water is intially syphoning out of the trap but over time the trap is perhaps slowly filling due to dripping from the tap.
If so an anti-syphon trap would be the answer.
good question. There’s no obvious breather anywhere as both are plumbed directly into the sewer as far as I can tell - the soil pipe with vent is at the back of the house.
however I don’t think it is being sucked out as it happens when the water is running in the sink after it has been left a while even if the toilet hasn’t just been flushed. It has only just started and the sink has been there a couple of years.
It doesn’t smell before running the water only for a short period after.
Fit an anti syphon trap would be my advice
Although it could be the overflow pipe that's got gunk in it and the warm weather is growing things in it
