Jus when you think the mood around the national team and Englishness generally might have changed, and actually grown up a bit, the tabloid press make you heave a weary sigh and roll your eyes once more

I'm trying not to be hopeful, but in this team i've seen signs of freedom, and enjoyment, and togetherness that seem to have been missing from past teams (and also some of our rivals) - add that to the capability we do have no matter what anyone says, and it can be potent.

I don't think it's our time yet, but this side has youth and time on their side - only 3 are over 30 (Vardy, Young, Cahill and half are under 25)

I'd like to see Southgate remain whatever, use the Euro's as another stepping stone, and the 2022 as a genuine target.

Careful Binners, those who criticise ‘our boys’ will be first to the wall, come the brexit revolution...

Excitement builds as country riddled with gun crime and cocaine prepares to take on Colombia

Curse you Gareth Southgate for replacing my jaded cynicism about the national team with some waistcoat-wearing hope

"It's not the despair, Laura. I can take the despair. It's the hope I can't stand."

At the risk of sounding terribly cocky - both Colombia & England must be thinking that a win tonight essentially puts them in the semi, especially after that first half...

I reckon they would both concede a few with a better attack

Just wish it wasn't on ITV.  England has a very poor record when ITV cover the games...

But, same here - beers cracked open and hoping for a good match 🙂

Ready and nervous

If we lose, I'm ready to rip up my wife's copy of 100 years of solitude

Dear god! Our national anthem really is a dreary dirge!

We should definitely replace it, for the duration of the World Cup with Kicky-kicky-kick-kick! 😃

Just don't freeze is all I ask. Play to your potential and if they're better, so be it.

As a scot I'm debating who to support. Have I forgiven the English enough for brexit yet..?

Born in York though, so I think I need to really.

Judging by how dire Sweden were this is pretty much for a place in the semis..

Jeeez, Sterling gets into so many good positions. End product so inconsistent.

It's consistently awful.

I reckon we're going out.

Can see why a player would go down tho, it's foul play that would never have been spotted else.

So... Tell me again why the south American teams have a reputation for dirty tricks?

American official to ignore Columbia’s misdemeanours??????

I’d put a big strong lad on for Sterling... Welbeck or Vardy....

How about a rule where if a player is deemed to have faked an injury inflicted by the opposition, the ref does not just give out a card but also dishes out physical punishment commensurate with the initial pain reaction.

well england the best team there but no goals to show which has been a problem for a few, Young asking some questions of the ref for things to check up on need to see Sterling swapped out there by the hour, loftus cheek for ali too

England have mainly had the better of the game, would be no loss for Ali to be replaced by Loftus-Cheek, he again has offered very little.

colombia not really playing too much, more about containing and I guess also frustrating youse a bit, can see them getting more dirty 2nd half.
