The comments about the "mindfulness moment" on the Winterwatch thread got me thinking.

A lot of the TV I watch is so called "slow TV" - non-confrontational, no false jeopardy or smarmy know-it-all presenters playing to baying crowds. So things like: The Repair Shop; The Reassembler; Mortimer & Whitehouse gone Fishing.

I think the first "slow TV" programme I saw was the sled ride through Lapland, four hours of basically following a reindeer pulling a sled. A few subtle graphics here and there about points of interest but apart from that nothing.

The premise of The Reassembler is brilliant:

"We are going to put this thing back together."
"Why is it in pieces?"
"Because I took it apart."
"Why?"
"So I could put it back together!"

Any others?

7+ hours
There was a similar one on BBC4, I think it was All Aboard or something similar.
There's a host of similar offerings here

The Detectorists for me. As soon as I hear the signature tune my heartbeat slows.

Bob Ross is the classic example of the genre! As far as "gentle" sitcoms go, as well as The Detectorists there's stuff like Parks & Rec, Ted Lasso (where you know everything will work out by the end of the ep!)

I bet YouTube is full of enthusiasts documenting their hobbies in minute detail, quality may be variable though 😃

there's a few examples on this link (including a Netflix series called "Slow TV"!)

Not tv as such but this guy talking about tailoring is very relaxing:

Antiques Roadshow is great. I was gonna say The Detectorists also.

I often put on 'Dog tv' on YouTube for the hound.
There's loads of videos of virtual walks, woodland animals, ducks, squirrels.

I like to put on 8 hours of squirrels, then go upstairs and wait for the shouts from my girlfriend that the dog is attacking the telly 😂

It's very relaxing to watch if you're not a dog.

I was gonna mention the canal boat film. So relaxing.

Tongue in cheek suggestion: the penultimate series of Breaking Bad.

Early Bake Off was good for this, little or no tension, just people baking cakes. The later series have a little over produced.

Test cricket, 5 days of gentle ebb and flow.

Not TV but having been put onto Marcus Stitz by Singletrack I've been looking at his videos. Slow biking. No Gnarr, no clashing soundtrack. Lovely stuff.

Whilst the action is hectic, the sparsity of commentary fills me with joy.

I often watch videos of people making stuff on YouTube, some recommended from off here. The people in them don't seem to swear and hurt themselves like I do whenever I try to make something.

I LOVE slow TV! It's the antedote.

Winter Walks was most lovely. Hooks was fantastic.

I do like repair shop, but the emtional bit where they zoom in to see everyone crying, I could do with less of that.

On the drama / comedy front Atlanta has a refreshingly gentle pace even when the subject mater is crime and violence

A couple of shows that didn’t get a uk wide broadcast but are worth a look are Frankie Boyles tour of Scotland which had a nice gentle introspective pace and Michael Smilies ‘something to ride home about’ that only aired in Northern Ireland but is really worth seeking out -  a really refreshing tone of telly making

If you liked that ElShalino, then check out "LE QUATTRO VOLTE".

It's an Italian film from 2011 about goats.....and the meaning of life of course but mostly about goats.

I was going to link the YouTube trailer but seeing as we're about slow film n' all that it's probably better to go for the full two hour version from the get go. The full version is up on YouTube as well, original Italian or subtitled, although most of the dialogue is in goat anyhow.

It's magnificent.

Ditto for Atlanta, a great eample of a show not being held hostage by plot. As casual as TV gets, very much about existing in the moment and dwelling on the nebulous.

There was a Steven Soderbergh series called "The girlfriend experience" that had a similar feel and tempo to Atlanta. Well worth checking out.
