I was thinking of getting the boy of the house a NOW Tv box for this weekends upcoming international rugby fixtures.
9.99 for the box and 6.99 for the day for a sports pass. So he can invite all his mates round and watch in the comfort of the lounge.
Is the quality any good? Does the signal drop out much?
Worth it?

Use it for The Entertainment Package (Just for Walking Dead in fact) and did the trial for movies, and it seems to be OK. Don't have an issue with buffering - quality is OK but not HD. We do it though the Playstation 3, with a hard wired Ethernet connection.

Not sure about the sports specifically, but there are certain programs on the 'Live' entertainment channels that I cannot watch because of licencing restrictions.

I started using NowTV last year and found it to work ok. Occasional buffering but overall quite good.

However on the last day of the Premiership season the service could not cope and there were long outages. I missed the first half of Man City's tile winning game thinking it was an issue with my equipment before giving up and going down the pub to watch it.

I received a refund and free 24 hour voucher but that hardly makes up for missing half the match.

Before buying a box check if any of your existing devices can receive it. e.g. PS3, AppleTV, Roku Streaming Stick

OOOh I have not seen that Jamie, cheers.
As far as alternative boxes go, I don't think you can buy a day pass to sky sports without either a nowtv box or a skydish. Is there another legal way to get sky sports?

Yes you can. I used to use them with the NowTV app on my PS3.

Same goes for iPad, iPhone, Android, XBox, some smart TVs, Chromecast etc

Oh thanks Jamie, so do you watch through skygo?
pk13, he has been doing this but it can be hit and miss as the friends often use up all their allowance.
Happy to pay 6.99 for the day to be sure he gets what he wants.

I now have the NowTV box. Picked up the £19.99 deal.

FWIW, the sports passes can be picked up for £4-ish on eBay.

But you did watch through skygo?
I think you are saying that I can just buy a pass and watch on the laptop, (which has HDMI).

No. I have always used NowTV.

You can use NowTV, which is essentially SkyGo for non-subscribers, on your laptop...or on any device which can run the NowTV app.

Firstly, make sure you can install/run Silverlight.

Then visit http://www.nowtv.com/ to create an account.

Buy a sports pass from either NowTv or eBay.

Redeem it on NowTV's site, and your good to go.

I believe Chromebooks are not supported, and there are some issues with Macs running Yosemite.

No, I used to use it through the NowTV app on my PS3, but now use the NowTV box 😉

...but you can watch it through the laptop.

If I was you, I'd just get the box for £18 from ShopTo. Remove the cost of the passes, and the box is only £4. Plus it comes with a HDMI cable.

Well he also has a Z-Box nano, with linux but if I can persuade him to install W7 as the linux is annoying me. I find windows easier to navigate to put the kids movies on. He has a legit copy of W7 which he was going to put on my W8 laptop, but I've got used to W8 now. So I reckon seeing as it's a mini PC already connected by hdmi to the telly it may well be the way forward.
You are all lovely helpful gentlemen thanks.

I think it is only the rugby internationals he is interested in, is there 3 or 4 england games ? Then not again until this time next year.
