I'm not into football whatsoever, and maybe this is influencing my opinion, but does he really deserve a knighthood?

If David Beckham did then Ryan Giggs certainly does.

depends on your view model professional one man club and the most medals and a great player. Bit bland as well
Deserves it as more than most of the politico ones but a lot less than say Bob geldof who actually made a difference to the world.

but does he really deserve a knighthood?

If you consider any work he does outside football, then maybe yes. Simply as a footballer as most people will (want to) see, then no.

He's a great example to kids & has managed to perform year in year out in top flight football for 20 years...Of course he does !

The only mistake he's ever made was choosing to play for Wales when he should have chosen England.Wales were never going to win anything, but England might have won something with him in the team...Plus a player of his ability should have played on football's biggest stage.......

Once was in Russia when Giggs was asked the question which visiting scribes threw at him every single time Wales played a match away from home.

“Why did you choose Wales and not England?” started the local inquisitor.

For a brief moment, Giggs rolled his eyes, shook his head in dismay and appeared to be about to give a mouthful to the journalist involved.

For 13 years, he had tediously had to answer this particular poser and Giggs’ patience had snapped.

However, after spending five seconds to control his emotions, he replied, “Because I’m Welsh, not English. Simple as that.” Which is the line Giggs had trotted out time and again, and continued to do so up until his last match for his country.

Or you could say thats another reason why he's a great example to kids - he chose to play for the country he felt most connected to, not just choose the one that gave him the most exposure/opportunities.

Or he could have just thought that England aren't likely to win anything either!!! :o)

If my memory serves me right he chose Wales because his nan asked him to.Not saying it was the wrong thing to do if he wants to be Welsh, but in footballing terms & winning stuff etc,he should have been at every world cup in the past 20 yrs imho.I don't need to copy stuff from links I've gooled, get a life..... 🙄

or perhaps the fact he could not play for england - he played for england schoolboys because of where he was schooled but he aint no Saesneg so he did not have a choice ...not that I doubt his patriotism

I don't think the influence of Ferguson should be overlooked when it comes to the question of Giggs choosing Wales over England.

Much more beneficial for Utd if Giggs wasn't involved in an EC or WC every 2 years. Probably goes some way to explaining why he's stayed at the very pinnacle throughout his career, whilst Beckham, Scholes (comparitively), Neville have faded in the autumn of theirs.

as their memory is factually incorrect it would be rather hard to link it anyway so dont worry DS. I would suggest their lack of checking out whether stuff they believe is true or not leads to this beautiful mix of rudeness and stupidity.
here have another as my initial comment came from my memory whihc thankfully is also accurate

"Did Ryan Giggs have the option of playing for England?" asks William Holdaway. "I know he played for England at schoolboy level, but I gather that qualification depended on the location of your school. This could settle a long-standing and increasingly boring argument ... do your best!"

You're right, William. Contrary to popular belief, Giggsy never had the option of playing for England. He was born in Cardiff to Welsh parents, and only moved to the Manchester area when he was seven.

He did captain England schoolboys when he played at that level for Manchester United but, as Mark Wylie of the Manchester United museum explains: "That was due to residence. Plenty of Scots have played for England schools. It just depends on where you go to school."

Neither rudeness or stupidity thanks. If you bothered to delve a little further into the Grauniad archives, you'd find an article dated 2010 that states that the rule regarding educational residency was only introduced in 2009, is only an agreement between GB&NI feds - not a FIFA stipulation, and prior to that agreement UK citizenship was all it took to qualify for any of the home nations, Scotland's attempt to lure Shola Ameobi being an example.

It's only an agreement - and a new one at that

Not least the entire England cricket team, who collected their OBEs simply on the back of beating Australia in 2005.

Did we have a similar thread on the above, or is it just footballers that we look down on?

happy to apologise for not getting your /troll or joke.
However you are confusing the residency rule that can be used /exploited according to fifa and playing for the schoolboys.
We get UK national by birth - where you were born/parents/grandparents = who you play for
Some of the islands can pick any iirc Isle of man, Guernsey , jersey etc
Where you go to school = what schoolboys team you play for
5 years continuous residency* = you can play for any UK team under FIFA rules but they have agreed to not to use this without the education link which has been ratified for the UK as far as I can tell
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/8302195.stm
this explains the new rule FWIW.
* naturalised after 2 and some teams use this but UK does not

Might have been easier to just try and explain offside
Sorry for my rudeness before

I'd say Kenny Dalglish has a far greater claim to a knighthood, and his wife possibly even more so. Man U fayns need to understand just what Kenny has achieved within the game, and his work for charity outside of it, and his support of his wife who has also overcome her own difficulties to campaign to make a difference to people's lives.

But as mentioned; many footballers do work to raise money and awareness for charities that the media seldom recognises.

I think Giggs needs to achieve more in the game as a whole really, before he 'deserves' a knighthood. He's a long way off being anywhere near the Dalglishes, on that score.

Mind you, considering that many people have knighthoods merely for being successful in business or supporting political parties, I can't see why a footballer has any less of a claim really.

re gigs the most decorated player in English football history needs to achieve more

Yes he does. He's been part of a successful team; Dalglish has achieved far more as an individual, not just as a player, but as a manager, and for his involvement in various charities not to mention his work with families of victims following the Hillsborough disaster and his support for his wife Marina's charity work which has rasied millions of pounds to help cancer sufferers. If Bacon Face got a knighthood for 'services to football' (fair enough, not disputing that), then Dalglish definitely deserves one. 11 league titles with Celtic and Liverpool as a player, 4 as a manager with Liverpool and Blackburn, 3 European cups, 10 domestic cups, 230 goals from 559 club appearances and 30 goals from 120 games for Scotland. Somewhat eclipses Giggs' total there...

Typical of you to bring up something like Gerrard's acquittal for assault, eh? WTF does that have to do with Giggs or Dalglish? And you have a pop at me for 'insulting' your team? Pathetic. Hmm, Rio 'missing' drugs tests, Baby Rhino paying prostitutes for sex, the lovely Roy Keane deliberately injuring another player ending his career? Yeah, your mob are so perfect, aren't they?

Stop being so blinkered and thinking Man U are the only team that exists. 🙄

why can't you accept with dignity the achievments of Giggs?

Because they're not sufficient to earn a knighthood when compared with others who have achieved more as people, and yet haven't received equal reward themselves.

Why can't you accept that with dignity, eh?

I'll tell you why. Because the word 'dignity' doesn't figure in the vocabulary of a Man U fayn....

Seriously, don't start.

For what it's worth, I think both Paisley and Big Ears both deserve Knighthoods.
They may have been offered them and turned them down, who knows?

Promoting Dalgiesh's case by denegrating Giggs' achievements is a bit off though Elf.

Somewhat eclipses Giggs' total there.

Hardly "eclipses"

Dalglish - 10 league titles (between Celtic and Liverpool)
Giggs - 11 league titles

Dalglish - 10 domestic cups (between Celtic and Liverpool)
Giggs - 8 domestic cups

Dalglish - 4 international cups (between Celtic and Liverpool)
Giggs - 5 international cups

Dalglish - 5 community/ charity shields
Giggs - 8 community/ charity shields

So by my reckoning Dalglish won 29 trophies, whereas Giggs has won 32 so far with another 2-3 trophies a reality this season.

Yes Dalglish has a fine managerial record, but as Giggs is still playing you can't count that against him.

Elfin - I am a liverpool and have been for a hell of a long time. I think that Ryan Giggs deserves a knighthood.

The Kenny Dalglish knighthood thing is more to do with what he has done outside of the game...

Why do most (not all) Liverpool and Man Utd fans always behave badly and spoil the football threads on here ?

Is it because most of them are trying really hard to prove their credentials because the obvious ones are missing ie they never actually go to see their clubs/come from Liverpool or Manchester?

its not trolling it is a perfectly reasonable question to pose to elfin I accpeted he had a reasonable shout re liverpool players/anagers - yet I a blinkered then he goes off on one about me and other an u fayns being blinkered when it is he who can see the football world only through anfield shades

Dalglish definitely deserves one. 11 league titles with Celtic and Liverpool as a player, 4 as a manager with Liverpool and Blackburn, 3 European cups, 10 domestic cups, 230 goals from 559 club appearances and 30 goals from 120 games for Scotland. Somewhat eclipses Giggs' total there...

eclipses is way to strong a claim

he has collected 11 Premier League winner's medals, four FA Cup winner's medals, three League Cup winner's medals and two Champions League winner's medals. ....
On 16 May 2009, he became the first footballer to collect 11 top division English league title medals. Giggs was the first player in history to win two consecutive PFA Young Player of the Year awards (1992 and 1993) and is the only player to have played and scored in every season of the Premier League.[5]

he has hardly been eclipsed by Daglish has he ? Robbie savage or the current liverpool team YES but they both have very impressive records and we could debate which is the better. Certainly Daglish was a trully exceptional player and one of the very best to play for pool and [ behind law??] the best player to play for Scotland

Yeah, your mob are so perfect, aren't they?

Stop being so blinkered and thinking Man U are the only team that exists.

here one for you
Man u players have cheated [rooney dive to beat the arsenal invincibles was shocking] Players have conned refs and done tackles that deserved red cards hounded refs and behaved quite poorly on and off the pitch
Your go to insult the Pool 😆
Good goal by City poor error by Carrick

BorinBob; you're excluding another league title at Liverpool Dalglish won as player manager, and 2 of the 'international' cups Man U have won are little more than exhibition tournaments which weren't around when Dalglish was playing. Exclude them, and the totals are about even, yet Dalglish has also achieved success as a manager. By 'eclipsed', I meant his goal tally. You can't argue with that.

SBZ; I think he needs to achieve more personally to be considered for one, but an OBE or whatever is fair enough. His 'achievements' are as part of a team, not so much as an individual.

It really is a shame, I used to enjoy the football debates I/we used to have. When I lived in Didsbury (that's in Manchester) and visited friends in Toxteth (that's in Liverpool Elfin) there were some great chats and excellent banter about the football between the season ticket holders of both clubs followed by some great nights drinking and dancing. Shame that not all Liverpool fans can be like that, no bitterness, no plastic support, no childishness.

plastic support

So how are you getting back from Wembley tonight then Don? 😉

So, let's recap; Someone suggested Ryan Giggs should receive a knighthood, I disagree and put the case for someone I think is more deserving, so some folk get all arsey and then it descends into mud-slinging.

And you wonder why I don't want to waste my time with your rubbish?

Film's on. Shh now.
