Just watched a trailer on telly for St Catherines Walk, a shopping centre in Carmarthen, west Wales. Note any similarities in the logo??

it's just a ligature (sp?) - the way that particular letter pairing should be written if you can be bothered to find the right key combination on the keyboard...

So it can (and does) pop up a lot.

Yup, it's an old typographic convention, characters like fi, ffi, st, are joined together to make it easier for the typesetter, instead of having to select two or three type slugs they only need to select one, plus it avoids having the dot over the i
close to the upper curl of the f and looking untidy, it just helps visual letterspacing. It really only works with certain fonts, and sort of dropped out of fashion with digital photosetting, but has been coming back somewhat.

Ligatures

A ligature is a character consisting of one or more connecting letters. As in the graphic above, sauerstoffflaschenโ€”the German word for oxygen tankโ€”is the only word to contain the โ€œffflโ€ ligature. It also contains the decorative โ€œstโ€ ligature. Below are examples of standard and decorative ligatures.

Letter pairs with their associated ligatures in Adobe Caslon Pro
When appropriate, I always use ligatures of well designed fonts for print and screen. Though, sometimes it requires a history lessonโ€ฆ
As many people arenโ€™t familiar with ligatures, their use is often suspect. The use of some ligatures has become so rare that some folks view them as jarring, especially when editing or critiquing designs. Some standard ligaturesโ€”letter pairs like fi fl ffโ€”will pass by unnoticed while others (st ct sk sti) may raise flags. Then itโ€™s also possible, when not in edit mode/mood, some skeptics will pass over the more extravagant ligatures unnoticed.
Often, concerns with ligatures are not unfounded. Ligatures canโ€™t be used for everything, so itโ€™s possible to go overboard with them. They can be used in body copy above certain sizes, but rarely should they be used for titles. Letter combinations in ligatures canโ€™t be kerned, so titles using them often suffer from blown spacing.
