Short break somewhere in Europe, Mrs_d is thinking of Bruges. Any opinions?
doesn't have to be warm.
Oops double thread post. Please ignore or, mods, please delete one of them
Yes Bruges is nice and with the mini cruise of the Hull Zeebruges ferry makes good long weekend break
and the half moon brewery visit is ace
Haven't been to Bruges but everyone says it is nice - I'd like to go.
Amsterdam is interesting, and easier to get to.
I'd like to go to Fontainebleu as well.
Top of the list is San Sebastian.
Bruges is very nice, got the train to the coast Knokke and Ghent for day trips too.
Bruges is a ****ing fairy-tale
Bruges is very pretty but there isn't a great deal to do there.
Apart from the Chip Museum of course.
Spent a day in Bruges and it is lovely.
We'll be going back for a short break sometime soon, without the little 'un.
A mate who lived in Belgium for a while said Ghent is very nice too.
Prague is/was picturesque, but may have been taken over by stag/hen dos and Marks and Spencers by now (we went about 10 years ago).
Paris is also good. Take the tourist bus to get oriented/see the sites, and eat some fantastic food. L'Affriolé is one of our favourite restaurants (need to book) and is a short stroll from the Eiffel Tower.
Bruges and Ghent are both good, Ypres is worth visiting too.
I'd like to go to Fontainebleu as well.
Went to Fontainebleau recently, for the first time. Pretty town with an impressive chateau. Also, of course, the bouldering nearby. Not sure I could sell it as a city break 🙂
Bruges is a **** fairy-tale
This
Hated Bruges - feels like Disneyland
My vote would be Lisbon. Porto is nice too (mmmmm...port).
Thanks folks 🙂
I visited for two days a couple of weeks ago.
Very pretty and clean and tidy, not a great deal to do but the clock tower climb and canal tour is a must.
Half Moon brewery tour is essential, as is sampling as many of the 1200+ local beers as possible (i managed around 30).
Eurostar is a great way to get there too.
What about Tallinn, Estonia?
Just been on a stag do but will be going back with my wife to have a better look around.
Very nice friendly people, lots of history and felt very safe there, even in the early hours.
Hadn't considered Tallinn tbh. Isn't it a bit like Prague, full of British stag n hen parties?
Prague is/was picturesque, but may have been taken over by stag/hen dos and Marks and Spencers by now (we went about 10 years ago).
Been to Prague seven or eight times with Mrs Taxi, not got caught up in any stag or hens yet. They go there of course, just to different places that a couple on a short break might go to.
+1 for Bruges. Lovely place. We stayed here Hotel Jan Brito really liked it, great breakfast, and took tea in the garden, lovely staff too.
We were in Bruges during the Easter break and it is indeed lovely.
It was a spur of the minute trip so we just got a cheap ferry ticket (£77 return) and stayed in an Ibis near Calais and did day trips to Bruges, Calais, Boulogne-sur-Mer and Bruges as none of them are far to drive.
Antwerp is nice.
Only stayed there one night after the cross worlds and got shit faced and was sick everywhere but it looks good on the Internet.

We only saw one group of English blokes, plus ourselves, the bars were mainly full of mixed sex groups of Finn's and of course locals. That was at the begining of April.
Always wondered why the Flemish cities are known by their French names - shouldn't we be talking about Brugge and Gent?
(I like Belgium and have been a few times - All the above are good recommendations.)
Hmm. Might go this weekend....
nbt - MemberBruges and Ghent are both good, Ypres is worth visiting too.
+1 on Ypres, been there a few times, remarkable place and the new museum is very good!
Next week me and the missus are doing a long weekend, going to drive to Amsterdam, have a night there, then come down through Bruge, have a day or so there, then over to Ypres have a night + day there, then pop down the road to Ploegsteer to fill up with much cheap Belgium beer and home again

Brugges is quite rowdy. Too many Brits on stag doos and fights.
Seville.
Brugges is lovely, one of the prettiest places I have visited. If you are all keen cyclists, you can set off from Dover at 6am (via Dunkirk) and arrive in Brugge at 2pm (50miles total). It's a really nice ride through France and Belgium and the last stretch in to Brugge it incredible.
ok, short break has now become a full week, and destination is now Sorrento, Italy.
Any hotel recommendations? looking at hotel & flights up to £600 per person for a week. Dates flexible, any time from 2nd week of June.
I've looked on Expedia & there's so much choice my mind is well & truly boggled
Bratislava is quiet nice
Copenhagen & Malmo was a good weekend city break for us a few years ago, train between the two cities (countries) is dead easy, loads to do in Copenhagen, Malmo much quieter but very nice
Kristiansand in Norway very nice too but not that good for flights
Edit Sorrento is nice, fly to Naples and get train to Sorrento, dead easy and cheap transfer, dont bother with taxi or buses
On same line is Pompeii & Herculaneum for a day trip
Can't recommend a hotel unfortunately as we had to swop hotels when there and wouldn't really recommend either of the two we stayed in
We stayed a mile up the road in sant agnello. Lovely place. I'll try to remember the name of the hotel
