He's an inspiration, fingers crossed.
Oh bollocks... hope he is okay
Such a nice guy. Shit!
Everything crossed, doesn't sound good as lorry involved.
Just awful awful awful, met the wonderful Alex twice and such a lovely cool man. Fingers crossed.
He's one of my absolute heroes, he was racing in F3000 at Brands Hatch when I was in one of the support races. We bumped into each other in the paddock and chatted (sort of, his English wasn't great, but better than my Italian) for a while. He was a star in the making and I was no one but he was lovely. I followed his career and was gutted when he had his accident.
In 2012 I went to Brands for the paralympic cycling to see him win again. Superstar!
I really hope he's OK, but he's already packed several normal lives into his own.
Gutting, such an inspiration and nice guy.
Fingers crossed.
Honestly, in a week of shit news, this hits home. ๐
Terrible news
That's horrible news, not what you want to read at all.
Another one here who's met him at a WTCC round at Brands Hatch, he just had so much time to talk to everyone and was obvious it was no act. Was over the moon too when he won a Paralympic Gold.
His story, more than anyone else's, epitomises conquering adversity and showing what can be achieved when you see no barriers to success.
A truly inspirational man, I'm struggling to find the words to express how deeply his story has resonated with me over the years...
Please, please, please let this not be the end!
Doesn't sound good.
A Carabinieri police official in Montepulciano said the incident involved a "heavy vehicle."
Local TV at the scene of the crash showed what was apparently Zanardi's handbike lying on its side and missing two of its three wheels. A large truck pulling a semitrailer appeared parked on the road ahead.
"It happened on a slightly downhill straightaway just before a slight curve in the road," national team coach Mario Valentini, who was following the race, told La Repubblica Florence. "Alex veered slightly into the oncoming lane just when a truck came. (The truck) tried to swerve but couldn't avoid the crash."
Prosecutors in Siena opened a criminal investigation into the incident and into the race's organization.
While we wait for good news (hopefully), by pure chance he was the subject of the Beyond The Grid podcast this week - what a charming, funny, utterly straight human being he is. Two hours of peak Zanardi - I presume it's also available to non-Spotifiers.

Looks like better news today as he is moved from hospital to a specialist rehab unit.
Sounds encouraging - rather worried when I saw the thread resurrection.
He's a proper tough cookie
That's good to hear.
