Shin splints, not sure?

I have been out walking & camping for 3 days, so I have been carrying a backpack of around 10 or 11kg. I was also trying out some newish hiking boots.  I have quite a high arch in my feet and I forgot to put in the superfeet Green insoles in.

I came home earlier than anticipated due to some horrible pain down the front of my shin just above the ankle and today its feels lot worse

I am fit and active, with a lot of walking, hiking etc. Dr Google appears to think it shin splints, any help or advice please?

New boots - did you lace them differently to your old boots?

in particular did you wrap the lace around the ankle or tighten the ankle loops more than your old boots?

I could be wrong (I frequently am) but I thought shin splints was a generic term for various conditions from stress fractures to compartment syndrome.

Is there anything specific that brings the pain on or makes it worse?

I think medically it is more precise but the normal definition gives several things ticking the box. My guess if it kicked in quickly would be a muscle/tendon issue vs bone but best to go and see a doctor.

New boots, no insoles plus walking with weight a few days in a row gives lots of inputs for ==pain.

This happened to me in 2003 walking Hadrian's Wall, I put it down to two main things, carrying too much weight in my rucksack and walking too far too quickly, I had to bail out near Lanercost having walked over about three days from Wylam.

I took a bus to Carlisle and train and ferry home to norn iron, it was excruciating trying to walk for a few days and then eased after about three so if it is shin splints give it a few days of rest and if it's still no better see the doc would be my advice.

My experience of shin splints – does it feel itchy? Does it hurt if you stamp your feet? If so – shin splints.
