I found an old pair of M064 shoes for my lad to use for cyclocross.

They look like they take studs and have two red soft plugs at the toes. I've tried to remove them so I can put some studs in but they just seem to be really soft rudder and just deform as I try to unscrew them.
Stud spanners have no effect and molegrips just rotate the rubber.
Does anyone know if they are just there for show or is there a trick I'm missing to unscrew them?
