Here's the thing.
Need shed/summerhouse. Want something reasonable sturdiness and about 12x8 or 12x6 with a bit of a canopy/lip. Simple eh?
No. Again, I'm back into a word of folk slagging competition off and general murkiness of the market where exclamation marks are mandatory "Don't pay silly prices!!!!" and I don't know what I actually need. I know what looks nice, but that's not enough.
I now think I need a tanalised 22mm thickness T&G shiplap built by master craftsmen or else it'll be a pile of wet cardboard the following morning.
Do I though? T&G I get, but does it need to be 22mm thick, or will 13mm do? Does it need to be tanalised, or do you own a T&G shed that still looks good after 5 years just being treated?
FFS It's just something to fill a space and look nice, store some tools (& woodburner, natch) and eventually get broken into.
I can get a 13mm 12x8 made & fittted for £800, which seems reasonable....or 22mm tanalised and constructed using the cleavage of colombian lesbians for £1500.
What's the REAL difference between the two examples above? Both UK made. (colombian lesbians have been imported)
Sorry, bit rambly.
I would go for 19mm + on something you want to keep for a long time.
Do not use this company: http://urbanforest-timberbuildings.co.uk/
I prefer tanalised and then coated with decking treatment (bit harder wearing as designed to be walked on and just makes the wood look golden instead of staining it)
Any reason why not to use that said company?
Having had a 13ish mm walled shed in the past I would be looking at the 22mm one, whilst it is still there 4 years later and since being painted still looks good. It never felt particularly solid, creaked in the wind and definately wouldn't be a place I would have liked to have sat with a wood burner on.
You don't need a time shed, you need a Zombie Fortification Cabin (Clicky)
Any reason why not to use that said company?
yup, I bought one and it was terrible. Have also been contacted by a few people with similar problems. Wouldn't honour their own warranty. Seen more people mention the same problems on other forums since I got it.
Terrible quality cladding. Roof leaked from day 1 as their installers don't seem to know how to felt a roof. When I took the felt off I found day light through bits of the t&g roof and in some places they had laid adjacent lengths the wrong way round - ie groove to groove. Loads of nails in the floor completely missed the bearers. Large gaps in the floor. When I rebuilt it I found that the floor was about 4 inches too short and the ends had only just been perched on the floor to disguise it. One end is about 2" higher at the apex than the other so the roof opens out at one end with a large gap. The nails have rusted in less than a year leaving nice rust stains all down the outside. Not enough supports on the roof and scraps of cladding used to brace the roof supports. Windows poorly fitted so leaked, a lot. Cladding poorly engaged (in some place you can feed paper between them) so leaks through the cladding in driving rain. Lots of screws and nails miss the frame and stick out inside so you can catch yourself on them. Others have split the frame as they have been driven in at the edge or at an angle. My long sides are made of two panels and one of them is about half an inch higher then the rest. Nails over driven through the cladding by nail gun, in some cases they are half way through the 13mm cladding. They used cladding around the edge of the roof and over the mid and corner joins - pretty much all of it split during installation.
Probably a lot more I have forgotten.
^ Things like that make me think I should build it myself, but it would end up looking like the house that Homer built, and I probably wouldn't save any money.
So, why aren't people falling over this as it seems to tick all the boxes, but none sold and no watchers (some of the cheaper sheds have hundreds of watchers.)
(oh and thanks, really appreciate hearing experience/advice)
You are in Leeds try tiger sheds they are local and you can visit their yard "woodlands" in horsforth . I have a 6 x 8 pent from them I'd was delivered early by a very able and helpful bloke and erected by me and a neighbour in an afternoon . I got the basic build quality and its sound .
The only complaints I have heard of is people from out of the area complaining about delivery which is understandable as the further the shed has to travel the more can go wrong time wise .
Plus if it is rubbish you know it's only round the corner to go and complain.
Next time I will build my own from 200 x 47mm t&g tanalised dung wall http://www.molevalleyfarmers.com/mvf/info/farming/Dungwalling
In fact I am tempted to build a house of a double wall of that stuff with sheep wool insulation in the middle.
Thanks, I've seen Tiger Sheds a number of times but I found they're expensive for what they are tbh.
Such as this
which was small and only 12mm cladding...again though, they may be worth it for some reason, can't figure out what that reason might be though?
Why don't you have a go yourself, if you are able to get some help as well?
Don't Know if my old Thread is of use?
I would do a few things differently if doing it again though, such as insulate the roof externally and put more noggings in.
I never did cost it up in the end as I couldn't be arsed but I know it was cheaper than getting an outfit in.
I bought a Tiger Shed bike shed a few years ago, only 7x4 IIRC, assembled it myself. Was good, their delivery was abit random, I think they have their own van which does laps of the country, so if I couldn't do the one day they were in Sussex it was another 3 weeks or something, but not a specific issue.
Lasted well, solid, dry. Moved to a house with a garage, so we left it behind. New owners still have it. I'd have another.
I would buy the 800 quid shed and spend a few bob boarding out the interior & strengthening door and frame.
Replace the cheapo hinges and refit new with coach bolts etc.
It'll be right .
Cheers andyl....been researching ready for a 20x10 shed build as the weather improves and had noticed that site...shame as the buildings look ok on face value.
Really tempted to get a load of pallets and build walls out out those...fill the gaps with newspaper as insulation and then just build a roof on top.
no worries, by all means call them for a quote and then reply a few days later saying you've heard some very bad things so won't be buying from them! 😀
Look for your local agricultural yard (like the mole valley link above).
I get graded and planed 3x2 tanalised 4.8m length for about £5 + vat. Much better quality that I have been getting lately from my normal timber yard in Bristol. I get my steel roofing from there too along all our farming stuff. I could build a much better shed for the price I paid for the UFTB one. At the time I was desperate and had an injured arm so had to buy one. Big mistake.
I've not done a proper comparison, but have you looked at a single stable? It'll come with no floor but will have a good 1 metre overhang, study walls, a nice heavy double stable door and a barred window.
I'm quite taken by the left field stable suggestion for when we next need a shed.
After suggesting it I had a quick ebay for second hand ones as our shed is on its last legs, no joy but new ones seem to be around £800 for 22mm 12x12
