for starters, can anyone tell me what thickness wire i need to buy for a shed wire up. basically for some sockets and a couple of strip lights?

i'm planning on using a dedicated shed fusebox if that makes any difference.

it'll be based on length of wire from the main board too.

'bloody thick' armoured cable seemed to be what my electrician used for a 25m run to mine.

Inside the shed you'll want 2.5mm for the sockets and 1.5mm for the lights. To get power to the shed it'll depend on a number of factors (expected max load, distance, how the cable is fixed), probably 6mm SWA unless it is very far or you have a couple of plasma cutters in there. I presume you mean consumer unit rather than fuse box. You'll need RCD protection and it is best if that is local (ie in the shed)

the only real non-digging option is to lay it under the hedge, which im not happy with and the missus wont accept the aesthetics of

Just so the tread is complete you need Building Control or a registered electrician to sign off the installation and connection of external power supplies. Which sounds pretty much what your talking about. Don't doubt your technical ability but not complying gives the house insurance a massive get out for any claim no matter how tentatively linked

On that basis, hand her the spade.

a sparky can confirm/deny this but i dont think you can take power out of your garages board - it has to come from the main house board ?

Or is it just good practice ?

Maybe the main board is in the garage?

Run to my shed is about 10m and its in armored cable under slabs. Its only for a double socket so the supply is off a switched fused spur in the kitchen.
