MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Looking to book somewhere in October. Was going to be Sharm as she just wants a decent AI for the kids and we've been before and it was OK. Then all the Mubarak stuff kicks off. Whilst the Sinai is supposed to be unaffected and the wife is still keen, I'd be nervous booking in case the unrest spreads.
Any thoughts..?
Why not wait a month or two and then book it?
please go iirc the Intenet is still down there 😉
Sharm is well away from the area nd so much revenue depends on tourism I think you will be ok. I went just after the shooting as hapshetshut [spell] and it was fine. They will just put the army all around sharm and not let anyone in if it gets bad IMHO
sharm will be totally fine. its pretty much isolated from the rest of the country. check out for example these updates of facebook from the dive centre that i use:
Ocean College We are back!! Missed you all. We once again have internet in Egypt, so see you all soon. Sharm has been an oasis of calm and it has thankfully been business as normal for us 🙂

Ocean College Just to let you all know we are all safe and sound. There is nothing going on here in Sharm except the usual. A guest told me that people who have come back from Sharm are saying on the news that the streets are full of tanks and soldiers in Sharm, the only tanks we see are the scuba tanks on the boats, so this is aloa...d of rubbish they are just getting their 5 mins of fame.

News is right about the fuel. The boats are ok as 6 trucks came into Travco yesterday. But for cars there is very little and when there is the cars are queuing in the only way Egyptians can queue (utter chaos!!!) all up the road. Food is ok... people did alot of panic buying missing from the shelves is bread, milk, rice, fresh veg etc but even that is coming back. Lets put it this way we are not starving yet but we will be upset if the beer runs out!! Some of the hotels are stopping their Al a carte menus just to be more careful and the reports that people are not allowed out of their hotels are rubbish as well. We havent heard any of that and they guests we have are all allowed out. One of the tour trip venders made me laugh the other day as I walked past trying to sell trips to Cairo only 10 dollars!!See more

or twitter updates from a dive guide out there:

I had a conference at Sharm next week that was just cancelled - all set to go and I think the organisers were keen to go ahead, but too many American fannies pulled out of the speaking programme for it to work. Although nae internet for a week would be a shock to the system.
It shows you how general panic just spreads and in people's heads the whole of Egypt becomes a danger zone. This is great for sensible people - if you book your holiday now you'll get a fantastic price. Flipside is that October is a while away though, so the whole country could have descended into anarchy by then.
With such a large percentage of their income coming from tourism, they're not going to let any trouble go on for too long. (I was there the week up to xmas, watching all the snow in the UK on the BBC) 😛
