Facebook are doing exactly the same. They got told they couldn't but have redrafted their T&C's and now they are going to start again
These 'free' services have to be paid for somehow! Remember Google, Facebook etc are not the products in these situations-you are...

I had a look and I was opted out by default.
Clearly my endorsements aren't values 🙁
I'm opted out of the ads stuff by default and don't really have an issue with the rest as it's a) only stuff showed to friends and b) I don't use google plus which seems to drive the +1's, reviews etc... anyway.
Just checked an no I'm not opted in.
At least you can opt out. Unlike Facebook, which will show your name and photo against products you've never 'liked'
