Blimey, what's been goin on! There's asshats all over the place, don't see why STW should be any exception. The forum has definitely become a less nice/fun place since I first found it though.
TJ - you obviously didn't read last nights deleted thread towards the end did you?Or at least it would be funny if it wasn't so tragic in that the forum will now be a poorer place as more of the nice interesting people feel forced to leave and the stupid unpleasant ones have no one left to challenge them.
can we move away from the subject of rape? maybe start a 'is it ok to joke about paedophilia (catholic priests, michael jackson etc) but not rape?' thread
It has amused me how many of the unpleasant intolerant fools have outed themselves on this thread.Or at least it would be funny if it wasn't so tragic in that the forum will now be a poorer place as more of the nice interesting people feel forced to leave and the stupid unpleasant ones have no one left to challenge them
It amuses me how holier than thou you are with your opinions. You're almost patronizing with your attitude towards the women on here, jumping to their defence and being overly PC when its not necessary.
Joke about rape? Those two words will never be in the same sentence. Ever. Sorry, I do robust humour but never that.
As a man who takes himself far too seriously, this doesn't surprise me....
Oh Graham that must be truly AWFUL!You poor thing, how DO you cope my dear
โ
Which bit? The not really noticing apparent isms bit, or the putting up with your posts bit?
Nope GW.
However I do believe the forum will be a poorer place for the loss of sue and emsz.
Dont go ladies. It's pretty level-headed around here isn't it?
TJ are you lecturing everyone from your self built moral high ground? Do be quiet.
Anyway, how can "LOOK AT ME, I'M GOING" not be a flounce?
Why not just go?
(I'd like them both to come back though)(if they're reading this)(which they probably are)
I don't know what the final straw was here, but I've a couple of vaguely related comments if that's ok. Whatever the situation, I think it's deeply sad that anyone would feel the need to leave a group due to the actions of others. Anyway.
"It's just a forum."
... used by real people. It's easy to be a 'keyboard warrior' but the people you're interacting with aren't NPCs, they're human beings.
The medium isn't relevant. If you were face to face with a bunch of people you sort of knew to varying extents, at work maybe, and Tracy from Accounts walked past, would you yell out "bloody hell, I'd go out for a bike ride"? How about on a conference call? In a restaurant? Being interviewed on the radio?
Thing is, as soon as "the Internet" is involved, for some people this immediately trivialises situations. "Oh, are you going out riding on your bicycle, with your little friends off the Internet? How sad."
Part of the problem, I think, is that STW has its running jokes. Own with bombers, weeing in shoes, etc. The "back doors" comment has entered the STW Lexicon as just another gag; it's crude of course, but it's blatantly stupid, and I've never really thought that anyone really meant it any more than they're seriously considering physical assault with a pair of forks.
Maybe Sue was being overly sensitive. Probably not. I've no idea. But, there's no denying that a minority of people just don't give a toss what they say or who they offend. Who cares, right, it's only the Internet.
Ye gods, I go away for a couple of months and everthing goes to hell in a handbasket.
Who is being a dick this time?
I didn't feel nearly objectified enough on my shaving thread. I was quite disappointed if anything.
A few people saying the sexism on here isn't bad, they all seem to be blokes (difficult to be sure) on the other hand 2 women are leaving our little group because they believe STW is quite sexist, hmm who to believe on how much offence is being caused to the women of the forum. It's a conundrum right enough.
No, the sexism's annoying and ever-prevalent. I made the point only yesterday that women are routinely referred to as evil bitches or the like whenever a divorce thread comes up. The hilarious snakes-with-tits comments come out on such threads as well, which I think is a perfect combination of crassness and stupidity, and probably points to why she left you in the first place.
Is Neanderthal behaviour on here acceptable? No, not really, but I assume that most offenders are a bit thick, can't help themselves, and will never change. I could kill myself trying to eradicate sexism and racism, and honestly, I wish I could say that I cared enough to do it, but I don't. I simply ignore the idiots here and let them get on with it, maybe commenting on or reporting the most egregious examples.
i tried to objectify you on your shaving thread, i even sent you that sexy photo telling you to touch my junk!

Did the beard stay though?
I didn't objectify you in words - but thoughts can't be controlled... ๐
Who is being a dick this time?
Pretty much everyone. Some more than others though. ๐
Who is being a dick this time?
This reminds me of the inspirational speech in Team America - World Police.
nickf
well said.
I do care enough to challenge the behaviour and look at the flaming I get for it. I understand why people think its not worth challenging.
This reminds me of the inspirational speach in Team America - World Police.
TSY - I'm not sure that speech is going to help right now...
Good speech though. Made me think differently about deep issues like diversity and philosophical subjectivity.
Pretty much everyone
Well it looks like I will slot right back in where I belong. ๐
FWIW, if you feel like saying something that degrades women, try it out on your mother first. If she isn't keen then you are probably an awful person.
I'm not sure that speech is going to help right now...
It wouldn't be the first time that Team America has failed me ๐
Torm - you never lock yourself out of your Mum's and had to forecably gain entry?

Was it the sex tips? I can see how that might go wrong... especially if you were following the advanced version...
TJ, sorry but IMO you have such a tendency to go on (& on) about things that sometimes they're almost devalued/trivialised as a result, even when your points are valid
2.5 millions posts on the bike and chat forums, and the odd person gets miffed/offended etc...doesn't seem like a bad ratio to me.
people pretty much know what threads are going to have banter (or worse) in and they are prettily easily avoided.
Torm - you never lock yourself out of your Mum's and had to forecably gain entry?
I was about to make a comment about cat flaps but it would not be in the spirit of thread.
fair comment scardypants
Maybe but would YOU use that phrase on STW cougar? If you wouldn't then you already know that there is difference between that and bombers/weeing in shoes. The "back doors" comment has entered the STW Lexicon as just another gag
edit not having a go at you, but you did lump them together. I've used various STWisms but not the backdoors one.
Was it the sex tips?
Nah, it was Darcy getting me to show my commitment to the cause.
Can I just say
Best Troll ever!

Which one is raised eyebrows?

Cougar makes a good point, too many people treat Internet forums as an exception to the normal rules of reasonable behaviour and say things they know wouldn't be acceptable to say in front of a mixed audience in "real life".
Mark had a similar thing to say when something similar happened a few months back and he has the power to ban users so even if you disagree, it'd be unwise to ignore this.
no elf on this thread yet?
*waves to phil*
Here's a thought: Consider what you wish to express. Consider who will potentially be reading it. Consider if those audience members may take offence, bearing in mind that those audience members are not you . If you consider that they might, how about considering either rephrasing your statement to minimise that risk or just not saying it at all.
To be fair there's a reasonable number of people who'll be offended at just about anything in any situation, even rational comments. I didn't see the comments in question so it's hard to judge but I reckon I know the sort. I think it's the propensity for these easily offended people to whine, or the expected occurence of that whine, which leads some people to take a "I don't give a damn, I'll say what I like" stance. Not putting the blame on those who are offended here, but pointing out that people are a bit sick of being careful not to upset anyone and just want to be more "themselves" (without having to be cautious not to offend). That doesn't mean they're sexist, it just means they haven't taken the time to vet each comment they make as they think it's a fairly safe place to put their sense of humour forward loosely.
6 pages....FFS
Who cares...

And guess what? We had a thread on exactly this topic only yesterday, which ended up getting vaped by the mods because of poor behaviour. When I left it was all going nicely, so I have no idea what was said later on.
Well im not banned, and not had a warning for a while, and im not going away, anyone care.
No.
Sorry to see the two ladies going, and if i have said anything in the slightest bit offensive, to them im so sorry and offer a grovelling apology.
Please dont go.
Ps didnt see the ofensive thread lasrt night or know what it was about.

emsz and Sue_W amongst others, apparently.
Shall I start the Fourm v's RealLife thread again then?
the beard went, but is back again.

Well said. If you don't like the way this forum is, leave. The mods do their best but it's the people who ultimately make a forum. If you don't like the people you're in the wrong place.
Certainly no need for a drawn out, attention seeking farewell or 6 pages of debate.
Has the initial rant even been graded yet???
Personally, I'd give it 4/10 but only because it inspired 6 pages of pish
