Don't believe the old search is going to come back - if it was it would have happened by now. Very very disappointing.
That's not particularly right. The old search used MyISAM and fulltext which was causing some unacceptable table locks when searching through a million posts. We're working on a replication solution to get around it, but it's going to take a little time and other resources to implement.
